a little higher than I had hoped, considering the role he has on the team.

Hopefully he's not just a temp in the top 6 and he can embrace that role and consistently produce at the level he is now. He'd be a steal at that contract if he can even just continue his current level of play.

Could be a great deal for the canucks... could be Cooke part 2... 4 yrs is a big gamble for a veteran player who's never played in a top 6 role before a dozen games ago!

Has it been established whether or not he has a NMC/NTC?

It no longer feels bittersweet every time Burrows scores.

Pretty good deal for both sides. I was already resigned to the fact that Burrows would test free agency and that someone would overpay for him. Now hopefully he can keep up the production for the next few years and not fizzle away like Cooke did.

Very good deal for the Canucks and Burrows gets a well deserved raise. In Gillis we trust indeed.

PS - I don't recall Cooke scoring as many clutch goals as Burrows..

any word on a NTC? If there isn't one, this is a good deal.

Gotta give Gillis credit here - floating the idea that Burrows might be traded seems to be all the motivation that was needed.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Burrows would have been well worth 2 million out on the open market LAST year when he and Kesler formed that shutdown line.

Of course, it has alot more to do with our cap situation, but I don't see how anyone can think that this number is too high.

Good signing, he probably signed for a bit less than what he would of gotten on an open market, 2.5 to possible 3 mils range if he has a good playoff.

IMO $2mill is too much in a cap world (with an expected drop in the cap) for a bottom 6 player. I don't think you can look at "last years" cap numbers while handing out 4 year contracts either!

I don't think Burrows was paid $2mill/yr over the next 4 yrs to be a bottom 6 player... I think they see a progression in his game and expect him to take it to the next level - he is a very good signing as a top 6 player, as long as he can continue producing consistently.

If the cap goes down to the expected $40-44mill in a year, having $2mill/yr tied up for any bottom 6 player, takes away the quality you can plug into your top 6. If Burrows regresses to the player he was last year - a solid 2-way 3rd line agitator who can put up some points - he's overpaid at $2mill under that type of cap. If he can continue playing as he has this year - let alone improve on that - he'll be a good signing on his current deal (with the potential of being a great signing!).

Great news. Rewarding hard work with a long term contract sends the right message to the rest of the players.

If Burrows can maintain his current level of play and continue to compliment the twins at even strength it really bodes well for the Canucks having the means necessary to ice secondary scoring. Having a 1st line forward that is making a paltry $2mil for 4 years could turn out to be a godsend with the current makeup of the team.

If Burrows reverts back to a 10 goal, 25 point 3rd line winger that kills penalties and plays hard every night the contract will still be fairly palatable. Luckily, I don't see that happening.

The Canucks still have as good a group of contracts as you'll see league wide heading into next season.

Just one?

Calgary game seven to force overtime with 7 seconds left.

Minnesota game one to force overtime with 1 second left.

Where are you hearing this? They expect the cap to stay about the same for next season, maybe drop $1-2M at most, and possibly even go up a bit. So you expect the cap to drop 10+M in one season? Highly unlikely. Last I heard early projections are for the cap in 2010/11 to be around the $50M mark.

I agree with you that Gillis sees Burrows continuing his progression as a top 6 forward. He'll never be the go to guy, but a support guy with the Sedins, in a sort of Claude Lemieux-lite role would be great for this team going forward.
