Should Calgary Claim Gary Roberts who on waviers

While watching the Tampa bay vs Calgary game on Rogers Sportsnet March 1st the three analyst they had for the game talked about Calgary and should they consider bringing in the aging Gary Roberts. They were saying it would be a good fit for Calgary as Roberts could finish his career in Calgary.

Bob McKenzie from TSN mentioned about Gary Roberts maybe going to Calgary in his blog

Quote:

"I've never been on waivers before," the Tampa Bay Lightning forward said. "It's a first for me. I hope this isn't how it ends."

Roberts knows his contract is working against him. Because there is no performance bonus cushion this year, Roberts' salary counts as a $2.42 salary cap hit, with a bonus of $10,000 for every game he plays.

Roberts was hopeful of perhaps finishing his career with the same team he started it with – the Calgary Flames – but it remains to be seen if the numbers add up for Calgary. Roberts' team from last season, the Pittsburgh Penguins, are in Tampa tonight, although Roberts has been told he won't be in the lineup until the Lightning see what happens tomorrow at noon.

Calgary is going through a tough time with injuries. Todd Bertuzzi is the latest to go down. He has a lower-body injury that, sources say, is likely to keep him sidelined for about three weeks. He joins Rene Bourque and Daymond Langkow as front-line Flames' forwards who are out with injuries. They are expected to be back before the playoffs, but the Flames may need some short-term help.

Roberts was a little miffed that the Lightning didn't tell him he was being put on waivers – he found out when contacted by his brother in Toronto – but now only wants to get an opportunity to finish what he has already determined is his last NHL season.

Stay classy Tampa Bay, stay classy.

What a ****ing joke of an organization, for treating their players this way I wish then nothing but ill will... as for Robert's adding him for depth won't hurt... but I think he's gone before we get the chance

His experience might be worth it's weight in gold for some of our younger guys.

Still he has little impact as a player, but I would not be surprised if Sutter did pick him up as grabbing aging Vets at the twilight of their career is not something new for the Flames.

As long as he does not cost too much he might be worth the gamble.

This what Bob McKenzie states about Roberts Salary

Do you think Calgary can take on that salary.

Is there a rule against waiving players you don't want and can't trade?

Yes. Calgary can easily take on that salary. Should they? I don't know. I think Mark Recchi is the much more desireable of the two.

And Recchi has a cap hit of about a million less (annual)

No Calgary can not easily take on the salary... they had to move someone to LTIR just to make cap room for Nycholat
