Not quite, he's part of any package because that's the most we can give up that makes sense for our team.

why would Florida deal J-Bo for another pending ufa. The Canucks will likely be parting with one of Bieksa/Edler and a first.

Maybe they think they have a better chance of resigning Ohlund than they do of signing Bouwmeester.

Plus they get up front help for right now and down the road.

And they get a first rounder.

Makes a lot of sense IMO.

Well Ohlund has said if he waives his NTC it will be for a team that will sign him long term. He doesn't want to move at the deadline and then move again in the off-season. So I guess the question is whether or not Ohlund wants to go to Florida and if so do the Panthers want him at the price he wants.

If we think we can sign Ohlund, that's a very good deal for a rental player. I trust JM.

I'm getting the feeling Bo isn't going anywhere tomorrow.

That's what I've been saying all along, but this deal sounds pretty interesting. I'll be happy either way.

It would be very stupid of Gillis to trade good prospects, Bieksa, or Edler for a UFA. Even though JBo is a really high quality D-man, 20 games + small playoff upgrade of Bieksa/Edler - long term loss of Bieksa/Edler are not worth it.

If I were Gillis I'd pretend to want this trade now and asked for a permission to talk to JBo. However, instead of trading for him now I'd get a head start on the upcoming talks to sign him on July 1. Some teams will be throwing 2nd or 3rd pick at Florida a few days before July 1 to get a chance to talk to him. Why throw anything if you can talk to him now and find out what he wants?

Ohlund has already confirmed he would only waive his NTC if the team he was headed to was looking to sign him long term.

We'd definitely be looking to sign him long term if we're losing Bouw.

Seems like a good fit in that regard. Ohlund isn't the difficult type to sign. To me it just seems like he wants to go somewhere he'll be appreciated again, has a bright future and will get fair compensation. Whether or not he wants to uproot his family to the furthest point he can in the NHL, is another story.

Ohlund deal makes zero sense. We trade an elite UFA for a lesser one in exchange for a mediocre prospect and a high 1st. I'll take two months of JayBo over that.

If Ohlund isn't difficult to sign and valuable, why haven't the Canucks signed him?

Bouwmeester to Vancouver doesn't sound that bad really. Bouwmeester is from western Canada and would likely re-sign their. Vancouver has the assets to do the trade and also guys that would interest the Panthers.

I would think that

Bouwmeester for Bieska a 1st and Grabner would get a deal done.

Probably a bit of an over payment from Vancouver but still a good deal.

Or how about go for a mega Block buster (Never happen but here goes)

Horton and Bouwmeester

for

Hodgson, Grabner, Bieska and a 1st

Honestly, I don't think he's difficult to sign at all, I think he doesn't want to be here anymore for whatever reason. And we already have two older top 4 defensemen signed for a few more years, Ohlund's just not in our plans anymore. I think he'll be looking for $4-4.5m.

We have a lot of dough tied up on our backend.

Because we need the cap room to sign Bouwmeester in the off-season.

Because he's dropped on their depth chart and it's largely speculated Gillis wants to go after JayBo in the off-season.

Because Ohlund wants a long term deal, and the Canucks are not looking to offer that.

The reason the Canucks aren't going to sign Ohlund is due to the way their D salaries are, they cant afford to commit long-term to big money for a player of his age. Bouwmeester would be easier to accommodate due to his age.

VAN mentioned as frontrunners for Bouwmeester on SportsCentre by Bob McKenzie and on the Score by Stratchen, according to link here: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=615466
