[TOR/TB] Petiot for Kolzig, Rogers, Heward, 4th

"Brian Burke's busy day continued just as the window of the NHL Trade deadline slammed shut as the Maple Leafs acquired goaltender Olaf Kolzig, defencemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers and a fourth-round pick in exchange for a prospect Richard Petiot."

The way I see it is, we got a decent prospect in Andy Rogers(1st round pick in 2004, only 22yr old) and a 4th round pick for nothing.

Rogers is not a decent prospect at all. People see 1st round and act like he isn't a huge bust. When he plays which isn't often considering he is made out of glass he is one of the worst players in the AHL. He is an RFA after this year and the empty space on the 50 man roster has more value.

You bought a 4th for 500k.

Tampa will most likely 'owe' something to Toronto in the future. We'll see a trade in the summer thats titled towards Toronto I'd expect.

Burke basically paid 500k for a 4th rounder.

This one makes no sense. Petiot has been a career minor leaguer. How is he worth a serviceable goalie, a depth defenseman, a former 1st round pick and a 4th rounder?

Andy Rogers is the worst player I have ever seen get drafted in the 1st round. And it's not even close.

Kolzig will likely retire now. I don't see him playing for Toronto.

You are correct sir. And to the poster above, from what I've read, Andy Rogers has absolutely no offensive upside and will top out at maybe a 6th/7th defenseman if he's lucky. He's a career AHLer slash Europe bound. I almost guarentee he will never play for the leafs. This trade was classic salary dump, and I think this sort of trade is just the beginning of future salary dumps for picks throughout the league.

Looking at it personnel-wise, I agree, makes no sense. But obviously $$$$ is the biggest factor going forward and in that light it makes more sense. Although how they determined that a 4th rounder was the pick involved I'll never know. My only guess is that toronto was missing their 4th, so they wanted to pick in that round.

Serviceable goalie = Done for the season, will retire at the end of the year, still collecting a 2.5 million dollar paycheck.

Depth Defenseman = Done for the season, will retire at end of year, still collecting a paycheck.

Former first round pick = Walking injury, confidence issues, bad AHLer, RFA and had no chance at being re-signed.

This trade is a 4th for 500k.

So Tampa doesn't have money problems but feels the need to clear out 500K?

Both Kolzig and Heward are out for the year btw, and UFAs at the end of the season.

They qualify for revenue sharing now.

Oh I don't know, 4th rounder for 500 K, that was pretty smart IMO.

lol ok I get it. I was thinking all day wtf was Toronto doing getting BOTH Gerber and Kolzig. I didn't know he's out for the year.

Reminds me of the time DW took Malakhov's cap hit off the devil's books and got a first rounder as well.
