I'm under the impression that there's another 2nd in there...Calgary's to Edmonton?

I have:

Carolina gets:
Cole
2nd
5th

Edmonton gets:
O'Sullivan
2nd
Kotalik

Now does Edmonton's received second go to Buffalo, is that the thing?

Erik Cole (63 GP): 16-11-27 (30 years, $4 M, Pending UFA)

Patrick O'Sullivan (62 GP):14-23-37 (24 years, $2.95 M, 2 years remaining)
Ales Kotalik (56 GP): 13-19-32 (30 years, $2.3, Pending UFA)

That's really solid value. Really solid.

All I know is Carolina certainly didn't get the best deal out of all the teams.

I'd probably put it like this
1. Edmonton
2. Kings
3. Canes

Oilers are definetly gonna miss Coles heart and tenacity.

Also its certain that Cole will sign in Carolina, so the deal makes more sense for them than it does with any other team.

there's a difference between a PROVEN 30-goal scorer and someone who has POTENTIAL to be a 30-goal scorer. I'm quite happy with Justin Williams as long he is healthy next season. didn't the Kings get Calgary's 2nd rounder?

Well, we did get Calgary's second rounder...in the Conroy trade. We just sent it out today.

WOW I'M SO HAPPY!

Edmonton gets SMALLER next year with O'Sullivan's cap hit.

I'd like to throw a big %&*($&%($*& to Edmonton's management team.

And here's a big "I told you fools so" to all those people who didn't think that Cole would nab more than a 2nd rounder over the past three months. And another big "I TOLD YOU SO" to all those people who said Cole wasn't going back to Carolina ever since it was obvious that things were not working out for him in Edmonton.

Have a nice day.

So instead of waiting 20 games and signing him in the offseason, they trade Williams for that extra 20 games?

Terrible deal by the Canes. 20 games of Cole isn't worth losing Williams..

I think all of the parties involve will benefit if:

* If Cole returns to form along side Staal

* If Williams can get healthy again

* If O'Sullivan can fit in better in Edmonton than he did in L.A.

IMO, all three stand a decent to good chance of happening.

Call me crazy, but the Oilers make out like Bandits.

Cole for Kotalik would almost be worth the risk at this point, since Kotalik might have Chemistry with Hemsky. (They are friends, and Hemmer called Kotalik to tell him the news)

Getting Patrick O'Sullivan out of the deal somehow is just amazing.

As far as it's been discussed on TSN it's like so:

To LAK: Justin Williams
To CAR: Patrick O'Sullivan and CGY 2 - 2009

To EDM: Patrick O'Sullivan and CGY 2 - 2009
To CAR: Erik Cole

To EDM: Ales Kotalik
To BUF: CGY 2 - 2009

At least that's how I understood it. Funny because now that pick will read the following on draft day:

Round 2 - Buffalo (via Edmonton, via Carolina, via Los Angeles, via Calgary)

You know, unless the Sabres deal it in the offseason :-)

Tsn has us getting calgary's 2nd, which seems odd.

The Oil steal the show with this one. They give up Cole's cap hit, (4mil?) get a cheap young gun, who has a good future, and another decent winger in return. Not bad for a pending UFA named Erik Cole!!!

Williams is getting underrated by a lot of people here. He's been playing in the league for so long but still hasn't entered his prime years yet.

He's not doubt the best player in the deal, he's just had a few freak injuries in the last several seasons.

I think LA loses... unless Williams somehow pulls out of his always-injured state.

Edmonton wins.

The 2nd rounder sent to Edmonton was Carolina's. It was then shipped to Buffalo and I believe to Toronto for Dominic Moore.

Williams is the best player in the deal. I don't think we lose. I think everyone gets a question mark until next season.

If Williams is healthy, then all parties made out of this well. If Williams isn't healthy, then Kings got bent over.

Steve Tambellini's first major trade as a general manager in the NHL is a 3-way deal. Impressive. He's finally put his stamp on the Oilers and he's done a good job.

I do think Cole is being a little underrated in this thread. He may only have 16 goals and 27 points his season but he also has 13 goals and 19 points his last 33 games. He got off to a VERY slow start(3 goals in first 30 games) but he and Gagner had chemistry and he's basically been playing like a 30+ goal/50 point player for quite a while. If he can go it with Gagner, he can do it AGAIN with Staal.

Apparently the original trade didn't have the Kings sending a 2nd round pick to Carolina and it was going to be a straight one-for-one swap set to be finalized just before the Kings' last game. However, information about the deal got leaked that caused it to blow up. Lombardi had to apparently throw in the pick to get the Hurricanes to come back to the negotiation table to finalize the deal.

Quote:
This three-way trade was all but finished last night. The Kings nearly pulled Patrick O'Sullivan from the lineup last night, but didn't because they were still looking at medical records. Then it all fell apart, in PART because of me and my attempts to confirm the blog item that was in the Toronto paper. Certain details of the trade went public, and the trade fell apart. Dean Lombardi, who was my source last night in reporting that the Kings weren't interested, told me today that he had to lie about his interest in Williams, because the deal was in danger of falling apart. He gave me permission to say that, because he knows my credibility would take a hit, but he didn't have another choice at the moment.

The trade got revived this morning, and the bottom line is that the Kings had to throw in a second-round draft pick in order to get the deal done.
