Great deal... 400k for the pick is peanuts for the cash machine that is the Maple Leafs... Also Rogers has a better shot then Petiot to ever make the league...
So Tampa doesn't have money problems but feels the need to clear out 500K?
The theory is that by dropping the contracts, they will qualify for revenue sharing. If IB is around, he should be able to speak to that. Bob McKenzie asked Jay Feaster about this.
The question is why didn't they figure out a way to put Roberts in such a trade. If the Bruins got Roberts with Recchi, maybe they get a future 1st or extra pick or something.

They briefly touched on this on TSN. They said it in passing and didn't bring it up again. They said with Tampa moving the salary they did today it puts them at the player salary necessary to get a piece of the revenue sharing. So the leafs did them a huge favor today that I do hope is repaid down the road. They bought a 4th but Tampa just got a couple million bucks from the league at least.

Wish I'd been able to hear that conversation since the CBA's standard revenue sharing has no linkage to player salaries for a team.

Its called managing the money you do have. As in spending it on players who are actually playing for you and not on IR and wont ever play for you again.
Lest we all forget that the Lightning made a trade that was the reverse of this when they took on Melichar and Brookbanks contracts from the Hurricanes in exchange for Jokinen(who was on waivers for free twice) and a 4th round pick.
Having said that the 4th round pick in this TO/TB deal is in fact that Carolina 4th round pick. So TB lost nothing of its own here and saved 500K which is probably going to be used to pay Melichar and Brookbank...two players actually...oh I dont know.... playing due to the massive amount of injuries to the TB defense.

That has been proven wrong on a few Lightning boards. Salary doesn't matter in getting revenue sharing. Wish TSN would do their homework before they speak.

It was speculation on the fly, was never SAID this was the case. Bobby Mac asked Feaster, and Feaster said it wasnt his area of expertise but it was a possibility.
With Burke's drafting record there's a very good chance he will be. Leaf fans are acting like they picked up another 2nd rounder here.
So there is a certain excitement level you can see from your keyboard based on draft pick spot and reaction?
I see a whole bunch of people acting like Burke bought a 4th rounder. No more, no less.
What's the HF symbol for 2nd round reaction? Is it this:
I guess a 1st round celebration is: ? Or maybe it's:
I'm so confused, someone send me an emoticon list for celebrating adding a draft pick so we're all clear and avoid this confusion at the draft when teams are trading 's for a and .

I like how you made that up.
No one is saying that whatsoever. We just recognize that if you have more money and aren't going to spend it on UFAs, might as well purchase a few draft picks along the way. It means the organization's philosophy is right, anyhow. Instead of squandering draft picks, we're doing every means to get more of them - much different from past years.
I read Article 49 of the CBA last night, and I think it's pretty clear that TB *does* stand to gain revenue-sharing $ by dumping salary in this trade.
With the NHL wading into the morass of requiring "value" in a trade, they set the stage for making themselves look foolish - like they do now, having approved this trade.
Burke said last night that they had pre-cleared this transaction with the NHL, but had to wait to comment until it cleared the queue. I would love to have heard Bettman's language when he realized they would have to approve this!
So the value of this transaction to TB is pretty evident. To me, the interesting angle is the value to Toronto. As a previous poster pointed out, its quite possible that Tampa agreed to provide Toronto with some other "consideration" down the road. I won't speculate on what form that could take, but as a Leaf fan, I know what I'm hoping it is!
Thats pretty much somes it up. My question is what is Toronto doing with Kolzig (Isn't he out for the remainder of the season), Joseph and Gerber on the same team. Why not give Pogge the rest of season to show what he can do. Maybe they are have a sorts of try out for a back up or experienced netminder for next year if Toskala is shopped.
