I admittedly have been on the fence of tanking and getting a top draft pick, but I'm sick of it. I cannot even read any thread on the main boards without having to skip through tons of tanking comments. It's getting very old.
I could udnerstand cheering for a last palce draft pick when we had disfunction throughout the organization with an inexperienced gm and questionable coaching. However, now we have an all star front office team, headed by Brian Burke of whom I have complete trust in to rebuild this team, along with one of the best coaching staffs in the league. A poor organization relies on top picks, and as Columbus and Atlanta have shown, it's hardly ever enough to rebuild, or build, a franchise.
Top class organizations build through smart drafting no matter where they are, not top 5 picks. Yes, the draft is extremely important, but it's equally important to have a competent coaching staff and a smart, crafty management team to rebuild a franchise like our beloved Maple Leafs, and ladies and gentleman, we can confidently say we have both.
So I'm tired of all the tanking talk, I'm not going to be doing any arm chair GMing, because I believe in Brian Burke, I believe he will rebuild this team. I will always cheer for my Leafs, because that's what a fan does. Anyways, my rant is done, I'll be sticking to the Prospect thread from now on, atleast there's only a couple debbie downers there. Go Leafs Go.
