for the people saying Brooks is a bad journalists, you guys need to learn a bit about jobs/careers where you have to market something/yourself.
He isn't accurate is a better way of describing Brooks, but as far as being a journalist, he is a smart one. He gets his name out there and people talking about his articles. Generates more interest, thus, he will get paid more, because his articles get read. No one cares why, as long as people are giving hits to their site/ buying their newspaper/magazine to read what he has written. He generates cash for his employer, and in return, his employer gives him job security and a higher wage.
A few years ago Phil Esposito was going around and pushing his book.He gave great insight into how some deals are made. He said was dealing with one team and was offered a great deal on a real good player and he thought to himself it was too good of a deal and turned it down. He figured that there was something wrong with the player. The player got delt a few days later in what was viewed as hiway robbery and everyone was right as the player went onto be the best player on that team for awhile. Awhile later, Espo ran into the GM of the team and asked why he gave that player away. What had happened was that the player got drunk at ateam function at the owners house at "went number 2" in a priceless vase. The owner found out about it and ordered the player traded right away---didn't care what the GM got for him. The GM thought the owners would cool down, only to get a phone call from another GM asking him why the owner was calling him to make a deal and that is when the GM realized the owner s not joking.
I Never did find out who the player was

I think the phrasing you used "ridiculously overrated" is too harsh, BUT, I agree somewhat with your statement. Mark Staal has 2 goals 10 assists and is a -3. He has one PP point. He is a "nice" defensive defenseman..that is all.
What do you expect Tampa to ask for? Malone is a good power forward in his prime. He's only played 55 games because of injury and still has 22 goals this year, he's great in front of the net, he hits, he fights, he's a good leader.
I'm not sure why people think they should give him away for nothing. I don't think the value of him and Marc Staal is that different. I understand why both teams wouldn't do this deal though. If the NYR trade Marc Staal for Ryan Malone then they are just filling one hole, but creating another one and same with Tampa.
