Well, Chris Clark is the captain of the Washington Capitals, one of the best teams in the East. Jamie Langenbrunner is captain of the Devils. Sometimes, a captain is a heart and soul leader but clearly not the franchise player.

I'm pretty sure when people use to say Bégin was the heart and soul of the Habs, that they meant he was a franchise forward.

He was never meant to be a franchise center (meaning a bona fide number 1)...he was meant to be a John Madden-type shutdown guy (bigger, but much slower).

What I meant was his leadership abilities that would make him a "franchise" center. I phrased myself wrong when I said heart and soul. Yes, he was never meant to score a lot of points.

How about the one center that plays for Boston?

But according to Guy Carbonneau, losing to the 2nd worst team in the league is a building block.

I think we have to forget Pittsburg, they are almost certain to make the playoffs.. They were lacking quality depth on the wings badly, they have now Kunitz and Guerin to complement Malkin and Crosby...

We really are in the ****...

All the teams we are in the dog fight for the playoffs improved at the deadline, we didn't. The results account for that.

If there is a positive to see our opponents doing that well, its the fact that the Habs have no other choice to step it up big time and play their better hockey as well.. We will see tonight if this team has any kind of charactere..

Reguardless of points this team is playing like garbage while its competitors are heating up. Bruins are lucky they built a huge cushion on the back of those garbage teams because right now they are playing terrible aswell. 4 wins in 14 games or something.

Dallas is coming out desperate tonight, Montreal can't have any more fancy plays. They need to get the job done and to hell with the excuses, we dont want to hear them ANYMORE!

As I've said, we won't "snap out of it" until we're in 9th or 10th and lo and behold that's likely what's going to happen by the time we go in to Tuesday's game with Edmonton. The Habs get off to a lame start there, it will be a bedlam of boos. People will freak and rightfully so. The Habs did this in 06 and 07. what does that tell ya? Physically, mentally and leadership-wise this is a team built to plateau in October and then get serious in late March-April and play to ever-worsening degrees in between. The previous two times we do this:

1. Show signs of struggle but keep winning
2. Start losing but it's passed off as a slump
3. Look ready to break out of the slump once and for all (usually through home wins)
4. Go back to sucking but worse than before until it becomes seen as more than a slump
5. Hit rock bottom and leave fans with no hope
6. Start playing well and collecting wins
7. Start winning in incredible ways, showing the kind of heart and determination that would have been nice to see earlier
8. Either limp in to the playoffs just barely (either 7th or 8th) or peter out at the very end.

Well, chalk up 2008-09 as another season wasted but worse because this team was merely inconsistent in November-January before becoming truly horrid. And there's more talent to work with than 05-06 and 06-07. The team hasn't played this bad for such a long stretch since January-April 2003. Christ, 26-23-6 since November 1!!!! I am wondering how it worked in 07-08. My guess is that it was the right combo of vets getting hot, youngsters maturing, rookies making an impact and health holding up while others were hurt. I mean, we have the worst road record of current playoff seeds when we had a top 5 road record last season! Only in Habland, eh?

Gainey left the team intact to, as it appears, fall on its face and fail on its own. The off-season is his chance to re-tool and repair what was broken or faulty all along. If Gainey can't get this team back to being a top 10 competitive team in the league (top 5 in the conf. to boot) we'll really have to look at finding someone who can instill a philosophy of added toughness, grit, size and character in the room and on the ice. Then get a coach who can execute it, which Carbo isn't (Julien wasn't either only because we gave him a pansy team for his defensively strict style and the two just could not mesh in 05-06 after we decided we could ice 3 scoring lines and jettisoned defensive guys he loved like Dowd, Dackell and Juneau).
