Perhaps they were talking about size in terms of play.

Roto Wire has Williams listed as 5 11, 161 lbs. Not exactly the size guy King fans said they got. Almost as though they've never seen the guy play but commented as though they were experts.

I would be more than willing to be that's what he weighed in juniors. That's what hockeydb has him listed at, too. Yahoo has him at 6'1" 195 lbs. That height is probably a little exaggerated, but just looking at him I would imagine the 195 is a lot closer to his real weight.

I agree, I don't think this deal was for size though. I think Williams and POS are similar players, both snipers, this was simply a character deal. I don't see how people can say they love this deal now though, Williams is hurt. I think you have to wait until the end of next season before you can give this trade a fair grade without any emotion in it. And that's assuming Williams is on the Kings at the end of next season. I think some more musical chairs in the top 6 is coming this summer.

Just looking at highlights of Williams' goals, I'd say he's much less of a perimeter player than O'Sullivan. He gets a lot of tips and rebounds right in front of the net.

So the real reason of why sully was traded for williams comes out

Nothing too big to report today. Williams looked good skating this morning but still hasn't been cleared to handle pucks. Today was Ivanans' first time back on the ice, so his return isn't imminent.

Most importantly, Williams plays ping-pong, and he's good. Williams and Kopitar teamed up for a 22-20 victory over the vaunted Team Red Bull, Armstrong and Richardson.

I got a few things from Quick, about playing in a playoff race, and from Terry Murray, about Kopitar's recent play, so I'll try to post that a bit later.

When the NHL gets rid of the shootout in favor of the overtime ping pong match, we are so gonna rule.

Wow, watching that last video of the Canes winning the Stanley Cup in 06 got me thinking... Can you imagine our entire team with grizzly beards at the end of a Stanley Cup run? How funny would they all look? How about guys like Simmonds, Moller and Quick?

go kings!

Good post. Williams is just as injury-prone as POS.

Just to humor myself. Fun to read Kings fan's take on trades Pre-Cup days. One poster did get it right, Williams was brought in to build the locker room as much as to bring talent on the ice.

More highway robbery from Dean.

I was pretty skeptical at first considering we acquired him when he was injured AND we gave up the pick.

I certainly didn't know where I stood on that one. One of the best trades this franchise has ever made.

No joke! Somewhere, there's a Jewels from the Crown post about Williams as the "forgotten superstar," or something like that. Basically, they argued that Williams' numbers were brilliant, and he was obviously a top player, but several years of injuries pretty much made the league forget about how good he really was. He had acquired an "injury-prone" label, but it was perhaps a bit unfair. Once he came here and finally put together a long stretch of healthy play, he's shown that he's an elite player.

Williams is a classic Dean Lombardi reclamation project, an undervalued player. Mitchell is another. They're gambles, to be sure, but Lombardi has been willing to take some risks that were relatively low-risk/high-reward. I mean, O'Sullivan for Williams? That was a great deal, really. O'Sullivan had potential but in many chances he could never really put it together for more than a few games at a time. (I wonder how he would have fared under Sutter...) And Mitchell just cost cap space, but brought the potential of a smart, physical top-4 defenseman, a rare commodity in modern hockey.

Freaking epic, worthwhile bump.

Edit: One of my first posts on the site

Pretending that the injuries don't exist, we just traded O'Sullivan and a late 2nd for a 30-goal, 70-point stanley cup champion. I know I'm in the minority, but I like this deal. Definitely would have been better minus the 2nd.

But funny how HFBoards turns around--One second, Sully is a bad-angle-shot-master with no hockey sense, the next, he's untradeable. sheesh...

If Williams is healthy all next year, this will look like a steal. Williams is one of the most underrated players in the NHL (mostly due to missing time).

I didn't post in this thread but I'll admit at the time of the trade I didn't like it, mainly due to Williams injuries and POS age. Five years later DL should have a wanted poster with his face on it for this. Kudos to DL and I'm glad to eat crow.

Best thing Patrick O'Sullivan ever did in his NHL career was bring Justin Williams to LA.
