Ugh Jeanerret? That guy blows donkey dick. A horrible voice for play by play (beyond "nails on chalkboard" bad for me), anything the Sabres do, no matter how mundane, is amazing and the best thing ever, and I can't stand listening to how over the top he is. One of my least favorite announcers of all time in any sport. Does that tell you what I think of him?

The Pens' announcers are a disgrace as well. Beyond homerism, and since the Flyers home feed is never on Center Ice, I have to listen to those two d-bags banter far too often every season. I swear to God, I hear "Steigy" again, and I'm going to have to figure out a way to reach through my TV and strangle Errey. Gah.

My favorite play by play guys, hmm. I like Sam Rosen, even though he does the Rags. Good voice, knows his stuff. Jim Jackson I like, although I only get to hear him maybe 4-5 times a year (WTF is up with that, Center Ice? NO GAME IS A HOME GAME FOR FLYERS' FANS!!!). Again, a good voice and knows what he's doing. For the time I've grown up in, Gary Thorne is someone I closely associate with hockey. He may screw names up with regularity, but he's got a great voice for calling games.

Emerick's OK. I honestly think he has slipped a bit, and his voice is right on the edge for me.

I hate the buffalo guy. He's so annoying. No one will ever beat Mr Jim Hughson

Jim Jackson is pretty Damn good though. Does his job well because he is on a much more even level. Doesn't consistenly boast about our own players(eg sucking off crosby like a lolly pop)

But, I can't wait until he can say this one day

I do love JJ, but I have a soft spot for Saunders. I got to sit in the booth with him for a game and he was just one of the nicest guys ever. Propp was with him, who wasn't overly friendly. He wasn't a dick, he just didn't really say much. I sooo wish Bundy was there at the time............

The problem with a lot of pbp guys these days - Jeanerret included - is their tendency to "gimmick" their calls. They're trying to put their calls over ahead of the game itself.

For some guys (Randy Moller) it works, for other guys (Dave Mishkin) it's a horrific tragedy.

I used to always laugh when Doernhoefer had to read the promos for channel 57. Xena warrior princess tue. on UPN 57. That would always crack me up.

Two completely different animals because one is radio play by play and the other tv....that being said though, credit is due for Mr. Saunders.

Having XM and hearing all of the teams' play by play guys, I think Saunders is the best at bringing the actual game to you via the radio. He paints the perfect picture of exactly what is going on on the ice better than anyone else thats still doing games (some are so horrible...carolina's dude, atlanta's dude, the pen's homer, etc). Even though you can't see whats going on, you're right there when Saunders is giving the play by play.

I don't think JJ could bring the game to you that well on the radio(but I also don't think Saunders would be a very good TV guy).

Jim Jackson is the man, I especially crave his broadcasts after listening to pretty much every over announcer online this year! The thing I've always enjoyed about the whole Flyers broadcast team is a sense of friendship and comfort. I'm sure most teams are friends, but few have the conversational ease of on-air talk. This bunch is informative, entertaining, and keeps the watcher in the action. Some broadcast teams are very knowledgable, but make the viewer feel like he or she is dissociated from the players and the game. JJ, Doc Emrick, Beninati, Hughson, Cuthbert, and even Jeaneratte (although he's awful) involve the viewer in the action. They make you forget you're watching through a pane of glass hooked up to a bunch of electronics.

So, Saunders is decent but JJ is better... to answer the question.

I would love to go over to Jeanerrete's house and start screming at him while he watches something he loves on TV. See how he likes it. He sounds like an idiot and he is so annoying.

Anyway, I'm on spring break, which means I finally get to watch a Flyer's broadcast When you can't hear Jim Jackson for a while, it hurts. He's a pretty darn good play by play guy, not to mention I don't mind hearing a bit of homerism go in my team's direction for once.

Oh and so many of you are forgetting Gene Hart. I think someone had a post earlier in the thread, but this guy was a legend. He came to my elementary school once and talked to us about hockey and he was a really nice guy. I was pretty sad when I heard he died. He was a great announcer and IMO will always be the voice of the Flyers, just like Harry K will always be the voice of the Phillies.

FAIL!

He is fine when he simply talking, the guy knows what he's talking about, but that's it. When he gets any higher than a dull roar he is just about unlistenable. I think they hired Harry Neale to bring him down a bit.

The best for my money:

Jim Hughson
Bob Miller
Chris Cuthbert
Mike Emrick
Sam Rosen
If I had to choose someone other than JJ, it would be Emrick or Rosen.

Jeanerette sounds good on Youtube clips but once you watch a game you realize he's just annoying.

Good list.

Hughson's my current favourite; I'm glad he's back doing national games.

I really liked Paul Romaniuk. He ended up moving to Europe so I get to hear him call the Spengler Cup and Champions League games, but he was definitely one of my favourites when he worked for TSN.

I think Randy Moller's gimmick is funny, personally. But have you ever heard Dave Mishkin? I think Jeanneret might be the next MISHKIN!

The other cool thing about JJ is that he also does the Phillies pregrame show.

The scary part is that Jeanerette has a kid who does the Erie Otters games. Sounds almost the same.

Am I hearing that right?
