We could have kept Hartnell. He was asking for a lot less than the 4+ million he received. I think it was close to 3 annually over 4-5 years. Trotz is the reason Hartnell is not on this team, and Poile's stupidity in offering a 1 year deal to him with UFA looming is one of biggest mistakes he has ever made.
thats what I was gonna say. Hartnell wasnt going to break out here no matter what the numbers were. Trotz was through with him and he was through with Trotz.
Enoch you have to agree though his benching earlier this year was for the same reasons that he was "in the doghouse" with the Preds.
I'm not saying I wouldn't want him now though and ofcourse the only reason he wasn't signed was the impending sale. Between the Forsberg deal and the sale this team was sent back to 02-03.
Hartnell can create some offensive on his own, but he's best when paired with true offensive players (Carter, Gagne, etc).
He would be nice to have now. But, he wouldn't have the same numbers. And not because of Trotz... because of the offensive talent disparity between Nashville and Philly.
it's not that far, you dont remember his rash of horrible untimely penalties game in and game out during his last season here?
He had a stretch of bad games, including the stick sliding incident that gave the other team the winning goal in OT......with that said, I do think it is unfair to characterize his whole time here based on one bad season of bad penalties. I will concede that Harts has always had a penchant for taking dumb penalties, but he was also in the dog-house for most of his time here, which is unfortunate.

I agree with your assesment, my focus was on his last season especially leading up to the time that he left. It almost seemed like he did things just to stick it to Trotz some nights. I know that is probably crazy, but it seemed that way sometimes
I miss the "Bull Hartnell" Days, but that was a long time ago.
Also, he had a pretty poor showing against NYR yesterday, did anybody catch that?
