The Hurricanes have four borderline players:

Rod Brind`amour
Niclas Wallin
Frank Kaberle
Scott Walker.

Why would they retire when they are signed players?Give up their salaries. In Peter Karmanos's dreams. You don't want Roddy to retire because his salary will still count against the salary cap.

First off, we dont care what the salary cap is, we will NEVER spend to it.
Rod Brind`amour has been a drag for the team, though he has been better late, he is a shadow of his former self, so much so that he might retire.
Frank Kaberle is going to be a healthy scratch for the rest of his career as a `Cane, it is possible he will retire to go over seas and play.
Nic Wallin has been held back by injuries for all season, and like Kaberle, will not have a spot on the team next year. He has expressed great amounts of interest going back to Sweden to play, and I consider that a likely scenario this offseason.
Walker has been dealing with post-concussion symptoms, and it doesnt really sound that good. Im just speculating, but it sounds worse than Cullens` concussions last year, which took him until a few months ago to get his full game back.

For the Preds nothing really even close to a sure thing for anyone retiring but...

Greg DeVries - 36 year old defenseman who has no speed and any skills are decling but will likely go to a team to be a mentor
Steve Sullivan - Depending on how he feels after the season he may hang them up but it looks unlikely at how he is playing
Scott Nichol - Missed a couple months due to a bad concussion, will be 35 next season.

I cant see Sully and Nichol retiring but it would not be a total shock, DeVries may give it up depending on if he can find a job.
