Canes Sign Mike Murphy to Entry Level Contract

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?...ticleid=414399

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Mike Murphy on a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will pay Murphy $65,000 per year at the minor-league level, and an average of $541,667 per year at the NHL level, as well as a $235,000 signing bonus.

“Mike has had an outstanding junior career, and that is reflected in his record and the accolades he has received,” said Tony MacDonald, Director of Amateur Scouting for the Hurricanes. “He is a very competitive player with considerable upside and will add valuable depth to our organization at the goaltender position.”

I'm not sure if he'll start next season out in the AHL or ECHL. Although to be honest he might be better served in the ECHL for one year just to get more accustomed to the pro game and to get as many starts as possible rather then riding backup to Justin Peters. Statistically he's been brilliant with Belleville and if his game caries over at all I doubt he'll need to spend more then a season in the ECHL.

I love that Carolina always releases financial information like that right in their press releases. I wish every team did that.

Yes, 6th round this past year. He was overlooked his first draft eligible year as he was the backup in Belleville. Not sure who was the starter that year, I want to say Lalande?

The Canes hired a political consultant? Are things really that bad over there?

I agree. Very informative. With the Isles, you can't even gleam if it's a one-way or two-way deal.

$65,000 per year in the minors?!?!?!??! eeeee-gads. No wonder these guys pour their heart and sould into making the big time. Screw heart. It's all about the benjamins.

That's damn teacher salary. Work 3/4 of a year. Summer off. But still... 65k.

It says on eliteprospects.com that he weighs like 145 pounds or something? Is that true?

Teacher's salary? Not even close.

That's not even NBPTS certified (nevermind that NBPTS is not an easy certification to receive) and 30 year experience with a Master's degree salary.

In North Carolina, teacher who holds a PHD, is NBPTS certified and has more than 31 years of experience makes about $66,000. A teacher straight out of college with no experience, holding only a bachelors degree makes about $29,000.

http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/...8schedules.pdf

And people wonder why they have such a tough time finding teachers here.

Depends on where you look Sam. North Carolina is one of the lowest in the nation in terms of teacher pay last I checked (when I was applying for teaching positions about 4 years ago). Mind you 65K would be on the high end for teacher pay most anywhere. But North Carolina teacher salary probably isn't the best example to use. And people wonder why the public school system in this state sucks.
