Washington:

Ovechkin, Green, Nylander - 19.3, + whatever Backstrom and Semin re-sign for.

Boston:

Savard, Bergeron, Chara - 17.25, not considering what Kessel, Krejci, and Thomas re-sign for.

San Jose:

Thornton, Boyle - 13.8 mil, + Setoguchi, Marleau, Nabokov, Clowe...

See, good teams pay their star players. Pittsburgh has their stars locked up, so they look like they're in some sort of dire cap problem to people without context. But if you look at some of the other elite teams, they'll either have to sign their talents and be in a similar position to Pittsburgh, or lose them in FA and feel the repercussions of their losses.

If the Pens are stupid enough to trade away the best player in the league, then all I hope for is to see Malkin end up on broadway.

Feds, Satan and Guerin will be gone after this year. Plus, one more guy will have to go, probably Staal. That will free up money for a while. Then in the future, Gonchar will retire and Golo will be up full time, maybe 2010/11.

That he's not considered a vital member of the team any more doesn't change the fact that they thought he'd be at one time, and that he'll almost certainly still be on the payroll at a "core player" price tag during the year in question, eating up cap space.

I didn't mean that you were wrong in saying he was a core player. I meant it in the same way as you just said, Nylander making that much money and having the role he does on the team isn't right. They have to waive him at some point, no?

With the way Staal's been playing under Bylsma, I can virtually guarantee that he won't be traded until the summer of 2010 at the very earliest, and then only due to cap considerations if it drops dramatically.

It's also thought that Gonch will likely be given an extension after we all saw how the PP looked without him.

They could do that. But if nobody picks him up, he'll still count against the cap because he was 35 in the year that his current contract started, and if someone picks him up on re-entry, the Caps will have half of Nylander's per annum taking up empty cap space for twice as long.

There's no easy answers for Washington and Nylander, as far as I can see.
