Roger Maris? Are you kidding me? He had three great seasons, but only a .260 career average.

Ted Williams had a .344 average (7th all-time,) .482 on-base average (1st all-time) and a .634 slugging average (2nd all-time.) Only Babe Ruth has a better OPS. Barry Bonds career numbers aren't as good, and Bonds has some really good numbers.

Ted Williams missed nearly five seasons in his prime due to World War II and the Korean War. Had he played in those seasons, his HR and RBI numbers would have been much even better (and they were excellent,) and probably would have had higher career averages. In fact, he would have most likely been the career record holder for RBI's if not for military service.

Interestingly, when Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56 consecutive games, Ted Williams had a higher batting average. Ted Williams was incredible. Gordie Howe is comparable. Mr. Hockey won six Art Ross Trophies and six Hart Trophies. Ted Williams won six batting titles, but he only won two MVP award, though that had a lot to do with how much he hated the press and was hated by them. Being a Naval aviator and USMC fighter pilot during the prime of his baseball career also affected it.

I'm going with Elway. He pretty much revolutionized the position of quarterback.
