its kinda nice how Schneider will have enough development time if Luongo leaves after his contract expires.

This doesn't concern me too much. Luongo has always been one to hold his cards close.

It certainly weakens his negotiation position if he's quoted as saying the opposite.

Bah! That's par for the course for the Province. Nothing to read into.

Quite a lot of netminders outplay Luongo, while having a lesser salary cap hit.

Canucks fans should stop thinking what they have is the 2003-2004 Luongo.

I am not saying he will do it. He might. Just putting it out there.

Bang on. He has not been that great this season and is starting to rely upon past accomplishments, a la Kipper. I'm starting to get a bit tired of his prima donna routine, although replacing him would be easier said than done.

I missed the After Hours interview with Roberto Luongo, but I think its important to consider the context of the interview and the source of the article.

Roberto appeared after being pulled in an embarrassing 5-1 loss to the Coyotes. He must have been unhappy with his game and the effort of his teammates. I would think that, perhaps, his frustration on this night influenced his thoughts and words.

I would also suggest HF posters retain some skepticism given that the article is authored by Jason Botchford. The Vancouver sports media is often irresponsible and sensationalist. Botchford has produced his share of inflammatory stories.

If Gillis can't sign Luongo to an extension over the summer, then I see cause for concern and believe it justified to question Roberto's commitment to the team. The team's performance this post-season and a resolution to the Sedins' contract negotiations should go a long way toward helping Luongo decide if he wants to stay.

The media is probably running him out of town just like the media ran all the other great players that came to Vancouver.

Just like how Vancouver wouldn't be able to sign him long-term after the trade...

He should go to the Blues for some Lou in The Lou marketing extravaganza and he can claim all the profits as part of his salary while being cap friendly.

Luongo probably wouldn't even need to take a big discount to play in Detroit in 2010. With Lidstrom coming off the books and rumblings that he might retire, Luongo would fit perfectly in Detroit. Ken Holland tried to get him once and he's always said that an elite goaltender is something he'd build a team around. Add in Holmstrom's contract expiring and he's getting older fast with injuries and you might have two players gone adding up to about 9.75M right there. Stuart's NTC expires so he could be moved and you still have Rafalski and Kronwall with the youngster Ericsson anchoring your defense. It's certainly possible, although with the prospect of a shrinking cap there is no way Luongo could play in Detroit and get a big raise. Luongo at 6.75M could be workable however.

Did you watch the game last night? It was one of the sloppiest games I've seen this season.

Way to make this whole thing overblown.

1) He said the captaincy wouldn't effect his decision. It shouldn't. That has nothing to do with him thinking of signing elsewhere.

2) He wants to win the cup, like every other player out there and wants to be on the team that gives him a solid chance to do it. One could argue that any team with a Luongo playing his A game has a solid chance to win. Vancouver is the hottest team in the NHL right now (despite that sucky loss) so we do meet his qualifications there.

But thats not to say he isn't exploring other possible options. Nothing he's said has made me think its likely he'll sign anywhere else though.

Except the fact that Brody will probably still be playing in 2 seasons when Luongo's contract is up.

I agree that you have to take his statements within the context of the situation. They lost 5-0 to one of the worst teams in the league and missed an opportunity to get closer to first in the division. He was clearly frustrated and being the emotional guy Louie is, he spoke out of frustration. I have no doubt he will resign with the team.
