Cool Puck Prospectus Article (Lundqvist Related)

http://www.puckprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=54

They basically apply the baseball principle of "quality starts" to hockey, where a quality start is defined as:

.913 save percentage or better (they figured out .912 is the "median")

OR

at least .885 save % but must allow 2 goals or less (this to account for games with low shot totals that the goalie cant really control, there's more statistical stuff in the article as to how they decided all of this)

Anyway Lundqvist's quality start % of 67% is good for 3rd in the league behind Yann Danis (who has played only 21 games) and Tim Thomas. Hank has played at least 9 games more than everybody else in the top 10.

So (like most of us already knew) while he may not be getting the shutouts like last year, he's always keeping us in it...

I'm not surprised. Despite all the talk of inconsistency, Lundqvist has still been our best player this season.

By the way, I wish he had the whole "bail out" chart on there. I'm sure Lundqvist would be near the bottom

Geez, I hadn't even realized that BP extended itself to hockey now, too. Awesome.

Puck Prospectus is a phenomenal site. I love the creative ways they analyze the game.

One of the few things that most hockey Sabremetricians seem to agree upon is that Brodeur is vastly overrated. If you like Puck Prospectus, Brodeusisafraud.blogspot.com is another great site to check out.

Broduer's numbers are based on so few games that I don't think it accurately reflects his ability. HOWEVER, Clemmenssen's numbers do highlight that any devil goalie is getting a boost from how good the devils are...

Great article.

I do truly feel that Henrik deserves a Vezina nomination this year.

I do think he's been our team's MVP, which has to say a lot.

Sure, his numbers aren't gaudy, but these stats speak for themselves. This is a hell of a lot better way to base goalie stats off of than straight save percentage.
