NYI - PIT Brendan Witt

Islanders trade Brendan Witt and Toronto's 2009 2nd round pick (btw 37 - 40) to Pittsburgh for 2009 1st round pick (btw 19 - 22) and 2010 4th round pick.

This is a trade that would obviously be taking place at the draft and would be conditional on Pittsburgh spot being around the #20 mark. Thoughts?

No thanks from the Isles side. In a deep draft I will not give up one of our best defensemen to move up 15 or so slots. The 4th rounder does not make it much better.

Don't see either team doing it.

From Pitt's perspective, Cap room is tight and spending 3 million on a guy coming off a craptastic season makes no sense. I also think Pitt overpays a bit here.

For Isles, Witt is hard to move because he is one of our few physical dmen.

I'd actually consider this.

Not sure if it would be worth it to the Isles, though.

Economic$ of this deal are not attractive to the Pens; asset exchange is not attractive to NYI.

Forgetting for the moment how indefensible it would be to give up our 2009 1st this year for Witt, how on earth would we afford him when we have exactly one legit top 6 wing for next year?

No thanks from the Islanders, and probably from Pittsburgh too.

Bad deal for both teams.

Seems like an overpayment from Pittsburgh too

Umm, no, considering the Penguins are getting the only NHL-proven talent in the deal and are only moving down about 15 or 20 spots in the process.

To be honest i'd like to see Pens drafting the 1st pick rather than trading it for Witt.

thats reasonable, but it does not mean that the penguins are overpaying because clearly they are not

Doesn't really make sense for either team, Islanders will need some Veteran players around for the rebuild and Pens need to restock the prospect pool and couldn't make space for Witt unless sending Eaton or Dupuis to the Islanders.

If Shero gave up a 1st round pick for Brendan Witt, he would be run from town.

Proven talents don't matter around here.

Speculative futures are king.

Wisest observation one will ever read here was made a couple of months back (wish I could attribute it to the poster, but I forget his name):

"A lot of HF posters would take a roster of 20 draft picks over a roster of 20 Stanley Cup champions...as long as the picks had not yet been made."

So painfully true.

No, it is if they make it to the conference finals, or the semi-finals.

I think they have a pretty good shot.

Well he is again now but he wasn't for much of this season.

People don't realize how effective he is though. I remember when he got suspended for that elbow that the comments floating around were that he's "always been useless" and he "sucks". Shows how little people have watched him in the past.
