David Backes and Trevor Byrne

Can anyone give me a talent analysis of either of these two players?

Backes if from Minn and played for Manakto-Minn (?)

Byrne graduated a year ago from Darthmouth.

Thank you for your time,

Byrne is a very solid offensive defenseman. Very good skater w/good hands. He quarterbacked the Big Green's Power Play and was quite effective in that capacity. He transitions well and from what I saw of him at Dartmouth (haven't seen him at the pro level yet), was a good all-around player with size. His biggest weakness IMO is that he's not physical enough. He could finish his checks but he's not what you might call a punishing hitter.

Backes played for Minn. State Mankato last season (and will be there this season unless he decides to unexpectedly bolt). Backes literally carried the Mavericks offensively last season. He, along with Shane Joseph accounted for most of the Mavericks offensive production. Backes got better as the season progressed. He's very good with the puck. Makes nice passes, plays with a good deal of grittiness and works hard. The biggest knock on Backes is his skating. It's average at best. If he can make vast improvements in that area, he could become one of the top forwards in the WCHA.
