His contract was signed to begin in 2009-10, so this allows him to play for the Phantoms.

Van Riemsdyk has also signed an amateur tryout for the remainder of the current season and has been assigned to the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms.
What exactly does this mean?

Isn't his try out contract with the Flyers and they just assigned him to the Phantoms ???

Beleive it means he can play for the Phantoms without counting as a contract against the Flyers organization. He cannot however, play for the Flyers.

i think the try out contract is with the phantoms. I think this is the smartest move you can make. I dont want him in the NHL til next year. Let him get accustomed to pro hockey. I like the fact he wasnt drafted and thrown into the fire. By the time he comes up he should be well rounded and ready.

No, he signed an Amateur Tryout with the Phantoms and an Entry Level Contract with the Flyers starting July 1st 09. The normal procedure when the Flyers sign a prospect.

Wonder what the contract numbers look like.

that couldnt happen anyway.
Wheeler was drafted under the old CBA rules.

I am glad he is signed. I honestly was getting sick and tired of all the crap the last 4 or 5 days.

Entry Level deals have a maxium amount right? something like 875 thousand? Im basing this off NHL 09 which is probvally wrong.

Wait, what exactly is the deal with the Phantoms and the playoffs? They are currently 7th in the Eastern Conference. It's not top 8 from each conference like the NHL? Is it just top 4 from each division? I was looking at last year's final standings and the Western Conference had the top 8 going to the playoffs...5 from one division, and 3 from the other?

What am I missing here?

I know he will be available to play tonight, but will he actually have enough time to get there?

AHL has the crossover rule.
If one team is a 5 seed in a division has a better record then the 4 seed in the other divison the 5 seed makes it in.
So say its in the East this year Philly would be in over Manchester.
I am not sure how they are doing the crossover this season.
