Johan Frazen

(Went thru 7 pages of "value of" threads and didn't see anything on the guy)

Right Wing
Born Dec 23 1979, 29 yrs old
Vetlanda, Sweden
Height 6.03 -- Weight 218 -- Shoots L

Regular Season
2005-06 Detroit Red Wings NHL 80 12g 4a 16p 36pim
2006-07 Detroit Red Wings NHL 69 10g 20a 30p 37pim
2007-08 Detroit Red Wings NHL 72 27g 11a 38p 51pim
2008-09 Detroit Red Wings NHL 66 33g 25a 58p 42pim

Playoffs
2005-06 Detroit Red Wings NHL 6 1g 2a 3p 4pim
2006-07 Detroit Red Wings NHL 18 3g 4a 7p 10pim
*2007-08 Detroit Red Wings NHL 16 13g 5a 18p 14pim
*Won the Stanley Cup

I'm wondering what the salary range expectations are for The Mule on the open market...

- Late bloomer. Turning 30 this coming season.
- Isn't expected back on Detroit, so he'll likely end up surrounded by less talented depth in the coming seasons.
- Appears to be a 30g 30a 60pt player for the coming seasons.
- Looks like he had 40 goal potential this season, but was injured.
- Least favorable season to hit the open market as a FA due to economic expectations of the following year.

So, i'm thinking on the open market his value could be $4-5 million.
Any other yr i would say his minimum would be $5 mil... that's in doubt this yr, imo.

agree/disagree?
your thoughts...

Actually he is supposedly very close to resigning with the Wings according to news reports. My guess is 4-5 years at around 4 mil for the Wings. 4 mil for a potential 40 goal guy is not bad at all and its a lot easier to work with that cap number than the 6mil + it'd cost to resign Hossa.

On the open market he'd get over 5 mil.

A lot of people have questioned if he would produce on a team that isn't Detroit, but I'd love if the Leafs could ink him this offseason. His combination of skill and size is awesome.

very interesting... i had not heard that.
That would be the smartest thing for both sides to get done.
+33 goal scorers are not easily replaced, and the contract value the Red Wings get for Franzen would be better than anything they would get on the open market....

... but what does that do to the Wings cap situation?

Datsyuk (6.7)
Zetterberg (6.1)
Filppula (3.0)
Holmstrom(2.3)
Draper (1.6)
Maltby (0.9)
Kopecky (0.5)
Helm (0.5)

RFA- Hudler, Leino

Lidstrom (7.5)
Rafalski (6.0)
Stuart (3.8)
Lilja (1.3)
Lebda (0.7)
Meech (0.5)

Osgood (1.4)

$42.8 million committed to 15 players.
8 forwards
6 dmen
1 goalie

Approximately 12 million for Hudler, 4 other forwards, a goalie, and dman.

Lots of holes. I really don't see Franzen fitting in. I would be very surprised to see him sign for $4mil per in Detroit.

Habs would give him 5.5M+ this off-season if he's available. Exactly the type of player they need.

With the number of FA's the habs have, it would be a great fit.
Cap space available as well.

I think he would fit very well in Penguins. Even though it makes my stomach turn inside out seeing him in a Pens-outfit I think he would put up ridicolous numbers with Sid or Geno

That being said. I'm quite positive he is signing with the Wings

I think you can take any top end duo in the league and place Franzen there and he would look great on paper...

Sedin-Sedin-Franzen
Crosby-Malkin-Franzen
etc etc...

A guy who has never averaged more than a point per game in his career and hasn't done so on a firepower team may not merit more than 5 mill.

Maybe hovering around 4.5 but 5mill may be pushing it - especially with possibility of lowered salary cap.

I wouldn't give you a dime for him...

And no, it ain't just Blues' fan sour grapes. There are any number of players on the Wings and in their organization that I like (or at least have great respect for).

But Franzenstein ain't one of em.

Weren't Hossa and Franzen close to signing at 6.1 each?

EDIT:Not close, but that was what the Wings wanted to sign them for.

I think 3.5 to 4 but will sign for just under. Coming off an injury, it is hard to get big money.

Wings fans think Franzen deserve as much money as Hossa? If they are both willing to take a paycut, Hossa should get at least 1M more than Franzen IMO.

Give me an example of when this has occured.

Both Gaborik and Franzen will get huge money this ofseason..There is no denying their individual skill levels and gamebreaking ability.

i think his point production would go down on any other team not named the wings, but this guy is work horse out there, every wings game i watch (not many) this guy seems to show up.

Franzen is a finisher. He goes to the net and takes punishment and gets dirty goals as well as having an excellent shot and great speed and puck handling ability. Players like that are hard to find, someone who averages a goal every 2 games is valuable. He would have over a Point per game if they credited an assist for screening, put they dont, but hes just as valuable as someone who puts up a point per game. If only he wasnt injury prone...

How much trade value would the rights to Franzen be? You could package that up with Howard + Lebda/Meech + Hudler and gets something pretty decent.

Franzen was quoted as saying hes close to a deal and "knows he has to take less to maintain playing with a winner long term"

im guessing somewhere along the lines of 3-4 mil a season.

The latest on Franzen is that he'd get a deal similar in structure to Zetterberg. Long term, with the final 2 years low-balled to reduce the cap hit. Although, I doubt it'll be another 12 year deal.

So, just to throw out numbers...

6 years / $21 million

5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4 / 2 / 1 = 3.5 cap hit

Yeah I think he will too. Still if he where to hit the open market as a free agent I'd love to see Ottawa sign him. He'd be a great fit on their 2nd line.

Franzen will probably get between 3 and 4 million if the Wings re-sign him, but he'd probably get slightly more than that if he where to become a free agent.
