They aren't better but at the moment they make their teams better.

I think Mike Richards is a top 15 forward in the league.

Unfortunately I think Kovalchuk is top 10.

Mike Richards is a center. Crosby is a center. Malkin is a center.

Richards would be no higher on the Penguins than the third line center.

I'd take Kovalchuk in this poll over him.

Are we straight?

How are Getzlaf and Parise even with Kovalchuk? The man has 5 straight 40 goal seasons playing with a below average team most of the time, is only 6 goals away from 300! AT 25 YEARS OLD!

When taking the SAT, write "ILYA KOVALCHUK" for every answer. You will score over 8000.

Kovalchuk is without a doubt without a doubt one of the best pure offensive players in the league. He's probably top-3 in skill when it comes to skating, shooting, and stick handling, but it's everything else about his game that bothers me. I firmly believe he's below average in any hockey skill that doesn't envolve him scoring goals and getting points. Yes, he has gotten better, but I think that has more to do with how bad he was when he entered the league and there's definitley more improvment needed.
Puhleeze, half of these guys shouldn't even be allowed to sniff Kovy's jock. I mean seriously, Gagne? Morrow? Stastny? Getz? Why not add Nathan Perrot?

Some of the comments in this thread truly are incredible. Goals>Intangibles. It's not rocket science, folks.

Kovy without hesitation. I'm a Flyers fan, I love Mike and all that he brings to the team, but Kovalchuk is just a beast and has been one of my favorite players for ages. There's only a handful of forwards I'd take over him.

I'm a Flyers fan and Kovalchuk for sure. IMO, he is the best offensive player in the league.

I never said they were better. I said I would take these guys over Kovalchuk on my team. If he played those guys 1 on 1 he probabley schools them, but his play has never equaled winning throughout his career. Two way play and intangibles are what make great teams.

Richards, but it's close. A matter of personal preference.

I'm not a Philly fan either, despite the username. I'm an Oilers fan.

He is 200% heart & soul. Kill to have a player like him in the Copper & Blue right now.

I think for some people it's hard to put a player like Kovalchuk into perspective because he's never been on a winning team. Who would I rather insert into the Sharks lineup? You already know the answer. Now, Kovalchuk or THORNTON is a closer comparison... I'd BARELY take Thornton.

Well he hasn't had that much help on that team to be honest

Players that you have on that list like Elias, Zetterberg, Staal to name a few had an amazing supporting cast to get them to the cup, so that's not really a fair comparison to make.

I'm going with Richards though on this one

I can't believe Kovalchuk is so far ahead. I thought it would be the other way around. I don't really see how anyone could want Kovalchuk over Richards. In Richards you have a first line center, first line penalty killer, captain, hard worker, point a game player, who will likely stay that way for close to 15 years, and with Kovalchuk you have a one dimensional (though it is a great dimension) player who will never lead a team anywhere.
