Comparing Schenn and Backes to Richards is one of the stupidest things I have ever said. Richards is a point per game centre that is possibly the best leader in the game, he hits scores, dangles, passes, powerplay, kills penalties etc.
Schenn is a defensive defenseman.
Backes is a 30/30 right winger that hits and fights. He does have a lot of the same caracteristics as Richards... but he is not as good offensively and not as good of a leader.
Now for a proposal from edmonton....
O'sullivan, 2nd, Chorney for Backes?
A 40-50 point centre/winger a 2nd and a young D prospect for a 60 point grinder/leader?
As a Blues fan, I am not sure what type of point producer Backes is - Is he a legit 30g 30a guy or more of a 50 point player. But it goes beyond that, he takes faceoffs, will finish with 150+ hits, over 100 PIM and is a nasty player to play against.
He reminds me of Hartnell, but for the next two seasons (after this one - he is making 1.5 million less the Hartness). There is no reason for the Blues to trade him. 2.5 million for a guy who puts up the numbers he does, can play on the PP and PK....... Play center and wing.....
Ask yourself - why would they trade him? Who would replace what he brings to the team (powerforward)? And what do the Blues need?
Our prospect system has depth at all positions, though I would like to have a good young backup (Like Harding or another RFA/UFA that can fill in for the next year or two). Our d is pretty solid when healthy - and considering how patchworked it is and yet we are still in the playoff chase......
We will not have enough room in our lineup for the forwards - Eller, Sonne, and AP.
What do you offer the team for Backes that would make him expendable and fit the Blues needs?
From Toronto - you just don't have the pieces to make the Blues interested. This isn't knocking Schenn, but bringing him on will improve the depth - but just getting Brewer and EJ back will do that, plus the maturation of Junland.... , but really hurt the physical/goal scoring of this team.
As for the Edmonton offer, it doesn't address the team needs. Value wise it is fair, but.... doesn't improve our team. We have forwards like Suly. Chorney isn't needed on the back end with our depth. And the 2nd... adds nothing we don't already have in spades.
I think it's safe to say he's untouchable for anything other than 1st line forward /top pairing D/ top 15 goalie as an overpayment because there isn't a better priced up and coming power forward out there, much less available to replace him.
Backes is worth about twice is actual on-ice value right now. There are many guys out there who've got one good season under their belt. Backes looks like a hell of a player, and I'm glad to see Mike Gillis saw that and made a move for him, but it's an Offer Sheet, so you can't feel bad the Blues matched it, they obviously also saw how good Backe was.
Right now, he could probably land another young gun of the same calibur and a decent 1st round pick. IMO Backes will be with the Blues for a long time, he's an excellent player, and the Blues see that.
Also, due to the Offer Sheet, Backes cannot be traded until July 1st.
Richards >>> Schenn even if Schenn becomes one of the best defensive d-men in the league. Defensive d-men can only have so much value. Not sure what you were trying to accomplish with this post (I guess trying to be funny, but failed).. I just hope you weren't trying to compare Richards value to Schenn's. Maybe in Leafs homer land it's similar.
IMO Kaberle would definitely be on the table if a puckmoving D is what St.Louis is looking for. We can even take Mckee too even out the salaries more
Kaberle isn't what St. Louis is looking for because EJ and Brewer will be back with the team next season (and while EJ isn't Kaberle right now, he may surpass him in the next 3 seasons). The issues isn't even value - because Kaberle for Backes would be fair value - but what type of hole it will create in St. Louis. Backes is the closest thing we have to a PF beyond him is an aging Tkachuk (who at 36 isn't as effective).
We just don't have a player like him in the system - a true powerforward. We have goal scoring, playmaking, both offensive D and stay at home in the pipeline and on the team (granted the o d took a hit when EJ was lost for the season) - but nothing like a him that we could just plug into that role.
It is easy to find guys who will notch 150 hits and 100 pims.... but adding 20-30 goals on top of that - is much harder to find.
