The question that I ask is why wasn't this guy drafted before? He played decent in the AJHL from what I hear.
My guess is his height, weight, and size played a heavy role in his undrafted status. Someone else probably has a better explanation, but that's what I'm presuming taking into account his measurements.
I believe he's 6' / 6'2 and 175 pounds. I'm 8 inches shorter than he is, and I'm 10 pounds heavier.
Hockeydb has him at 6'0, 165lbs, so he was probably tiny when he was draft eligible. He's obviously gained a couple inches and about 15lbs since then so suddenly his frame looks like it's passable for the NHL. A summer of working with Dave Gagner and he should be in much better shape.
Next year, however, we don't have Fortunus and Baumgartner, (Stars returning to their own AHL franchises) as well as Mark Fistric. And Nathan McIver might be promoted to a full-time 7th D role with the Canucks next year, depending on his training camp progress. Don't know whether Heshka will be retained, and Sauve will go back to junior.
So that list gets trimmed down to:
But yes, it's a rather crowded blueline for the rest of this season.
As others have said, it's nice to see College UFA signigns again. I'm suprised we haven't lured thme in before. The Moose is run very similar to a NHL franchise (best in the AHL for luxury) so we have a lot to offer these guys in the AHL.
Why wouldn't Baumgartner be back? We signed him, not Dallas.
Canucks did sign Baumgartner, but I believe it was only for 1 year - which would make him a UFA this summer? If that's the case he may or may be back; I like the depth he provides but he may get a chance to crack the NHL roster elsewhere.
I like the career path on this kid. Big finish to his junior career, lost season to injury and being a college rookie that lets him get through the draft, and then comes back strong. If he can get big enough to handle NHL forwards, he might make it.
