Most hockey players here are really big headed and have huge egos but Oberg was in one of my small classes as a freshman (we are the same year) and was nothing but helpful.

As far as hockey senses go, he's a very cerebral player. He's not a flashy skater or flashy player, but he is good in transition, has a great shot, and is a sound positional defensemen.

Needs to bulk up, but that will come in an NHL conditioning program. He'll play in the NHL someday. Great signing. I was clamoring for the Wild to give him a shot but it looks like he chose to play in his native Canada.

Congrats to you guys for the signing and congrats to Evan.
Cheers and thanks for the info. Always great to add a guy with a good attitude to the organization, and hopefully he can develop his game. Walsky has already gotten into some game action in Manitoba, hopefully Oberg can do the same before the regular season wraps up over there next week.

It's great to see Gillis working to stock up the prospect cupboard. The amount of quality players Anaheim has found by going this route is absolutely ridiculous. I sure wouldn't mind adding a few more; John Mitchell would be nice.

defensemen with some offensive upside is by far our biggest organizational need. great signing no matter how he turns out.

It'd be nice to get a prospect with Mitchell's size in the system. That said, the Badgers were eliminated a couple weeks back and he hasn't signed yet so he may be considering going back to school another year. He was only a sophomore this season.

They were, but they've since got one back from injury (Coulombe), one back from Manitoba (Yeo), and during that tough stretch they picked up an ECHL All-Star rookie dman via trade (Brocklehurst, had to give up the franchise's 3rd all-time scorer Gajic to get him). Yeo was the guy they missed the most, and Brocklehurst seems to be a similar style dman (I've only seen him play once, but everything I've read makes him sound like a similar player).

The Fish are now back up to 7 dmen, but I'm not sure if they're all healthy. They did have the final week of the season off so there's lots of time for them to rest up.

Don't know whether Heshka will be retained, and Sauve will go back to junior.

So that list gets trimmed down to:
....
Victoria/Manitoba in-betweens:
Jordie Benn
Patrick Coloumbe
Trevor Ludwig
Dylan Yeo

But yes, it's a rather crowded blueline for the rest of this season.
I thought Coulombe's contract was up at the end of this season...

I could see Benn back in Victoria next year, in a bigger role. Provided he has a good camp, Yeo should be with the Moose full-time next year.

Nice to get another D prospect in the system. Thanks for the heads up.

Oberg's only 21 as well, so he's probably more raw than guys like Bozak and Gilroy. Should mean he has more room to develop as well though.
It's been going around that it's down to Toronto and Vancouver for Gilroy. So you guys have 6, and 7. We got 2, and 4. May the best GM win.

not big, but not small either. he should be able to add 5-15 pounds of muslce over the next 3 years or so. sounds like a nice package.

I honestly think he'll go to Toronto...not because Burke's a great GM, but because Toronto is the modern day hockey Mecca.

If we signed Gilroy wouldn't it make signing Bouwmeester practically impossible without moving another dman?

That d-man would likely be SOB, who I really think Gillis will shop. He's too valuable not to qualify; however, I think his attitude is writing him a one way ticket out of Vancouver.

I honestly believe the rumours of Bouwmeester to Edmonton. But who knows, maybe he'd rather play for a contender?

with our without Gilroy, I'd say we'd need to move a dman if we signed Bouwmeester. but that's definitely no reason not to add a prospect--especially in a huge area of need--for free.

Gilroy isn't much of a prospect though. He will be 25 next season and will sign a $2M+ contract.

Also has there been any confirmation on the Oberg signing? You would think TSN or the Canucks would have commented on it by now.

Bouwmeester to Edmonton?

Souray - 5.4 million
Visnovsky - 5.6 million (essentially an untradeable contract)
Gilbert - 4.0 million
Staios - 2.7 million (completely untradeable)
Grebeshkov an RFA, probably set to make $3-3.5 per

Where does Bouwmeester fit?

This summer is going to be awfully shocking to teams/players/fans. There just isn't cap space to make moves that would normally be made.

Have the Canucks or the Vancouver media confirmed this signing yet? I know its a minor pick up, but even the Walsky signing made the front page of Canucks.com.

The article that HFF posted says it should be done by Tuesday.

And you don't think Edmonton would make room some how? There's no such thing as an untradable contract. Toronto would trade cap space, say a minor leaguer, for Visnovsky, and a 2nd rounder. It's been done.

Unfortunately, since the Vancouver Canucks are cast as one of the possible outcomes for Gilroy, regarding this particular source, it means Vancouver has no chance in hell.

I don't dare give him hits to support the site, but let me guess, Toronto and Montreal are two other teams in the running...

I don't think so. The Oilers need to get some forwards over six feet that a) are not fat and/or overpaid, and b) are not captains who take extremely dumb penalties.

Bouwmeester is a transition defenseman, arguably the best part of Edmonton's roster.

The only way I can see JayBo signing with Edmonton is if Gilbert is moved out and even then, it would likely hinge on JayBo taking a hefty hometown discount. I don't think it's very likely at all. Edmonton needs to address their goaltending situation first and foremost this off-season.

Oh God, relax would you. I never went to his site... I went to a place far worse than that.

Well, Ken Campbell of the Hockey News is saying it's down to Vancouver and Toronto, FWIW...Link.
