Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Marco Scandella to an entry-level contract, beginning with the 2009-10 season. The Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL) have signed Scandella to an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2008-09 season. In addition, the Wild has reassigned center Krys Kolanos to the Aeros.
Scandella, 19 (2/23/90), recorded 37 points (10-27=37) and 67 penalty minutes (PIM) in 58 games with the Val d’Or Foruers of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in 2008-09. Scandella recorded eight power play goals and led all Foruers defensemen in scoring. He posted 14 points (4-10=14) and 35 PIM in 65 games during his rookie season of 2007-08. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound native of Montreal, Quebec was the Wild’s second-round pick (No. 55 overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Scandella won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2008 Under-18 IIHF World Championships, posting two points (1-1=2) and a plus-7 rating in seven games.
Scandella’s uncle, Sergio Momesso, was drafted 27th overall by Montreal in 1983 and played in the NHL from 1985-97 and his brother, Guilio, plays on the Italian National team and plays pro hockey in Milano.
