The only problem i see with Gilroy is that he will ask for too much, for a player who never played in the nhl to ask for 1 million dollars plus is rediculious. Especially when Burrows are only going to make 2 million and Kesler making 1.75 million.
With regards to Oberg, I went to school with his parents. Good people. I don't know Evan, but I suspect he has tons of character. You guys might have come up with a real steal with this FA signing. As a Flames fan, I'm envious.

I disagree. we have at least one slot opening in our top 6 with the (likely) departure of Ohlund. turning Ohlund into a puck moving, PP QB is exactly what our defense needs.

Sure Burke can trade one or two guys - but he hasn't yet (and that STILL leaves a pretty full blueline), and that's the blueline Gilroy & his agent sees. I'm not that familiar with the Leafs farm system - so who knows what other blueliners they might have which could also fight for a spot in the lineup.
Canucks have five defensemen signed for next season (SOB will be re-signed of course). There's an opening in the top six by default (nobody really coming up via the system as yet) - especially for what skills Gilroy brings.
Yeah Van Rynn gets injured all the time - but we have his twin brother named Salo.

I really hope Gillis doesn't get in a bidding war for an unproven player. The college signings he has made so far are low risk and solid. Tying up that much cap space in a college player would be a mistake IMO.
The leafs are in rebuld and i'd be very surprised if both of Kaberle and Kubina are back with the leafs.
True I expect Burke to trade one of them but not both. You need to keep some good vets around to help Schenn. Can't dump all the vets as it would put too much pressure on him right now. Plus Kaberle has a cap friendly contract and he wants to stay in Toronto - Burke won't unload him unless somebody overpays for him.
Still, as I said - both guys are still Leafs right now.

Bieksa was a drafted college player and he spent some time with the Moose. I'd say odds are better than even that Gilroy would spend at least some time wearing the Antlers if he signed with the Canucks.
Regardless, Gilroy would hardly 'handcuff' us. All entry level contracts are two way deals, so he could be shuttled down to the Moose if we were to pursue, say, Bouwmeester.
The thing about Gilroy is that he's not going to be on an entry level deal because of his age and so it's unlikely he's going to take a two-way deal from anyone.
That said, if it means adding a long term asset to the organization, maybe they feel it's worthwhile to potentially spend $1.5-2 million while having him play at least part of the season on the Moose next year. On the Leafs board it's been mentioned that Kypreos says Burke doesn't want to go over $1.2-1.5 million/year in base salary for Gilroy, so maybe the bidding war won't get as intense as we think it might.

With 25 teams rumored to be offering him a contract, I would think that he and his agent would only go to a team that gives him a handshake agreement that he will be in the NHL next year. He seems to have plenty of leverage here...
New York Native. I highly doubt he will sign all the way out in the West coast. I do hope the Vancouver and Toronto are the favorites are true. But he will probalby end up in the East which I don't care.

Brunnstrom was limited to an entry-level deal. He was only 23 when he signed. Gilroy is an unrestricted free agent not bound by the entry-level system.
