Exactly. I wouldn't have any interest in Backes if I'm another NHL GM considering how inflated his value is. He's a good player but I'm not convinced he'll ever be great and a player's value is usually at its highest right after a breakout year. You'd be gambling an awful lot that he can substantially improve on his numbers if you were to trade for him and the odds aren't great for that wager.

Considering some people here at the idea that Backes could be a 25-30 goal scorer, anyone suggesting that this year is a one-time event risks looking even more foolish down the road.

Great offer - overpayment from NY. If it was Staal and Montoya - I would be all over it as a Blues fan, but Staal is some what redundant in St. Louis - w/ Johnson, Brewer et al coming back next season. (Granted I think he would be top pairing here this year w/ Jackman.... )

backes is going nowhere, hes doing wonders for the team....not many players at his salary level could be doing everything like he does or even come close to making such a big impact every game.

Montoya was traded to Phoenix last year. He also had a 3.23 GAA and a .885 SV% in the AHL this season. We've had enough Toivonens/Schwarzs to last us.

No Kidding. I guess I didn't know since he was in net against us last night.

But that was my point. Great package, but not the pieces we need to make us better. And he would have had a better year in the AHL if he wasn't in Phoenix's system. They don't have a ton of D there.

1. The Blues can't trade him.

2. The Blues wont trade him.

3. If one and two can be bypassed...then a good goalie has to be coming the other way.

Did you not watch the game last night?

Montoya is no longer Rangers' property, and hasn't been for quite some time.

He's a Coyote now.

And I wouldn't take Montoya over any goalie the Blues have in their system right now -- Bishop, Holt, Schwarz, Allen, Berra or Toivonen.

How badly do the Blues need goaltending?

Would something around Cory Schneider, Mason Raymond work ?

Admittedly I'm not that familiar with the organizational depth of the Blues, but Raymond would replace a fair number of the goals the Blues would lose by trading Backes and gain a good goalie prospect.

I will also admit to possibly overrating Raymond, as I think his upside is more along the lines we were seeing from him earlier in the season when he was putting up decent numbers.
