Excellent for our 2nd line center. Another complete centerman, behing Trottier, that can pass, score and plays excellent defense.

Depending on later selections, he can also play the point on the PP.

Did Jungo send in a list? If he didn't, we're done for the night.

Just a reminder to the overseas GMs that it is imperative to send in lists if we're within 10 or even 12 picks before you go to bed. This thing can move in a hurry. Ten picks in two or three hours isn't far-fetched.

If we are done, then I believe it is Zamboni Mania who will be up first thing in the morning.

Nice work Jungo. You sent in a list. You got a good player.

Keep the momentum rolling, Zamboni.

You bet! I was shaking my head, seeing some of the defenseman selected before him. He had a short, but spectacular career. A true #2 defenseman in this format!

I PM'ed Zamboni

Well he brings just about everything I look for in a player: top offensive skills, size, toughness, disciplined play, Stanley Cups, and is one of, if not the best playoff scorer of the 30ís.

He hasnít helped me get anywhere in the atd playoffs the last two drafts, but hopefully the third time will be the charm, C Marty Barry

2 Stanley Cups
Conn Smythe winner in '37 according to both THN and the HHOF article
2 time playoff scoring leader
6 times top-8 in NHL scoring
6 times led his team in scoring
6 straight 20+ goal seasons
1st team all-star in '37
One of the early ironmen, missing just 2 games in 10 seasons

So, I REALLY hope VanI sent a list, wouldn't it be ironic if he hadn't?

VanIslander and I will pick within the next twenty minutes or so.

He'll look great across from Joe Malone on my top line, both as an offensive counterpart, and as a guy charged with mucking it up and generally making life difficult for the opposition.
While I don't like promoting other teams' players (too much), I do like promoting my own research. Based on my research about all-star voting in the 1930s, here's how Smith ranked:

1932: 2nd team all-star (behind Morenz)
1933: 3rd team all-star (behind Boucher and Morenz)
1934: 3rd team all-star (behind Boucher and ******)
1935: incomplete data
1936: 1st team all-star

A pretty good five-year stretch which excludes two elite seasons (1926 and 1929 were before all-star teams were voted upon).

I know it doesn't count in this format, but 5 more years like the last 4 and he's better than Mike Bossy.
I might get flamed for saying this but if Ovechkin's next year is anything like his past four, he'll be on par with Charlie Conacher. (In the regular season, at least).

After a last-minute discussion the last half hour via PM, the general managers of the Thunder Bay franchise agree to stick with the order of the original shortlist and select arguably the greatest Russian forward of all time (Ovechkin calls his childhood hero), certainly as speedy, skilled and accomplished as they come, the newest Twin to play right wing with the Conacher-Cowley duo is the legendary...

Alexander Maltsev

After all the research Sturm compiled I'm surprised that Maltsev didn't have a bigger jump in draft position.

Plus I don't think there was a player who looked cooler wearing one of those old school Soviet helmets.

I'm torn on the issue of just where we draw the line as to when a player become a legit pick at where their talent indicates, if that makes any sense. From what we've seen so far, he's certainly of first or second round calibre. But even a pro-peak guy like me needs to draw the line somewhere.

But yes, even after this season Ovechkin has a 4 year stretch that very few players can match. At least for the regular season. This year will be his opportunity to really show us what he's made of the in the playoffs.

Up to this point, his career actually compares pretty well to that of Bobby Hull. Of course, he'll have to do it for another 10+ years. And next year he'll have to obliterate the goalscoring race to an even greater degree than he already has. And then get a toupee, sign with a rival league for unheard of money, and father a 700 goal scorer. But...it's doable .

Really nice picks here tonight, fellas. Francis and Barry are the last of the great centers. Anyone who has two centers at this point has got it made.

Yeah, I agree with you arrbez. To me a guy with such a short prime should be looked upon in a similar way as players who had their primes shortened by injury (Conacher, Lindros, etc.) because we just don't know.
