Suter signed; Phaneuf to get similar deal??

So far no specific details have been revealed about the signing.. i think, however, that this means Sutter probably can't expect to sign Phaneuf at a reduced cost (if that is what the CBA allows whenever that gets solved)

so do u think a phaneuf signing is close? especially since gauthier was traded away?

also, do you think that it will be about where Suter's 3 year contract is too?

Most entry level contracts are for three years aren't they? (At least for the top selections anyway???)

What I meant was Sutter has delayed the signing of Phaneuf in the hopes that a new CBA will mean that he can sign Phaneuf at possibly a lower 'cap' and without the lucrative bonuses that rookies get today (league has also mentioned they want to scrap this from current CBA)

Now, Suter signed what looks like the average entry level contract for a 1st round draft pick and Sutter was hoping to sign something lower than that. Now that Suter has signed with the preds, do you think Sutter can wait for a new CBA and try to sign Phaneuf under that CBA agreement or not?

Well that's a total crapshoot. We don't know for sure that prospects drafted under the old CBA would be subject to the new one, they might be grandfathered in.

If a contract is signed before the new CBA I dont think they are affected, hense why alot of players wanted to be signed to multi year contracts. But if the league does the salary cut % thing then everyone gets affected!
we will see............

Why did Suter sign anyway. He's 2nd year College and there won't be any hockey this year anyways. Now he is not eligable for college? He must of got a HUGE signing bonus?

I would assume they felt he would develop better in the AHL than college at this point.

I think the other incentive is if you get the deal done now you probably get more money than those who sign after the a new CBA deal is reached

Thats one reason why Meehan isn't letting Phaneuf attend the Flame's rookie camp. He's putting pressure on Sutter to sign Phaneuf now rather than after a new CBA is made because its quite obvious that under the new CBA rookies will be left out in the cold by the union.
