Hatcher returns as coach of sorts...

Don't know if this has been posted, very interesting.

Quote:
There have been rumors all season that Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher would make it back on the ice in time for the playoffs.

And this morning, there he was.

But don't get ahead. Hatcher is joining the team in a player/coach role and will be traveling with the Flyers through the playoffs.

"Paul [Holmgren, general manager] just asked me to travel with the team yesterday," Hatcher said. "Obviously I said yes. They want me to be more of a player role than a coaching role and be around the guys, joke around, help them out when I can or whatever."

Very cool. Even though he won't be playing, his veteran experience will be a welcome addition.

I think this is more about Coburn.

I think Hatcher brings a different kind of leadership. I don't think its anything about Richards

I hope he keeps teaching Coburn and Parent a lot of things about defense/hitting. Great idea

Hatcher has much more experience than Richards, including a cup ring ('99).

Well I don't think it can hurt. Anything he can teach Coburn/Parent should be helpful.

I think people forget how successful Hatcher's stint as captain was...

I don't really get this one, wouldn't mind keeping him as just a normal coach though to teach guys like Coby and Parent how to play with some snarl and physicality.

I would have taken one knee Hatcher over one hip Jones for the playoffs, probably all season long too... Sad thing is, I would have taken one knee hatcher over 100% healthy Jones also.

Nice. I think he'll help out in the locker room. Maybe even be a better assistant than Berube.
He does after all shows emotion.

If could scream at the players between periods, that'd be great lol

maybe the last month or so has left the Flyers less than sure about this teams leadership.

I love Hatcher and am glad he'll be part of the team. Hopefully he'll light a fire under their *****, and they'll play to their potential.

I don't think you need him to be active to tag along with the team during the season.

Well that's fine if they want him to tag along and hang out with the guys, but unless he's going to play, none of that is going to change.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I am happy to see them acknowledge the issue.

Can't expect hatch to tag along for no pay for an entire season... The guy does have a family, after all

Yeah this is a good move, I think Parent in particular could use some of what Hatcher showed Coburn.

I think Coburn's been doing fine with it after a really poor physical start to the season, but in the last couple months he's be a machine out there. He was absurd in the last 3 minutes against the Rangers the other night

I dont think it has all that much to do with anything other than making him feel like part of the team. Hes been cool enough to not attempt a comeback and destroy the cap and I'm sure they want to make him feel involved and bringing him along for the ride cant hurt. He is technically on the team after all.
