AHL Free-Agents to-be

This could have/should have been in the Milwaukee Admirals thread...but I was hoping to keep the responses fairly tidy.

According to my records, these are the players whose contracts are up following this season. We plan to monitor these very closely in the offseason. If anyone has any info...we would appreciate it! (Also, if I'm wrong about any of these player's contracts - feel free to let me know!)

Drew MacIntyre (Signed a 1-years deal 7/1/2008)
Ryan Maki (Signed a 2-year deal 7/3/2007)
Ryan Jones (Signed a 1-year contract with Minnesota on 4/2/2008)
Cal O'Reilly (Signed 3-year entry level contract on 10/6/2006)
Kelsey Wilson (Signed a 3-year entry level contract on 10/6/2006)
Triston Grant (Signed a 1-year contract on 7/28/2008)
Tim Ramholt (Signed a 3-year entry level contract with Calgary on 7/18/2006)
Jed Ortmeyer (Signed a 2-year deal on 7/2/2007)
Ian McKenzie (Signed a 1-year deal on 5/6/2008)
Antti Pihlstrom (Signed a 2-year entry level contract on 6/1/2007)

Of that list, I expect Jones, O'Reilly and Pihlstrom to be retained. I wouldn't be surprised to see all of the others let go. Maybe MacEntyre is brought back for another year if they're not comfortable with Dekanich backed up by Jeremy Smith.

I disagree. I expect Maki and Wilson to both be back, and Grant likely will as well since we need someone to protect the prospects.

MacIntyre is gone, Ramholt is all but set to go back to Switzerland, and Ortmeyer is gone.

I thought McKenzie signed a three-year deal?

I can pretty much confirm I've heard the same on all of these. At the booster club party, Wilson stated he was planning on being back in Milwaukee next year. (Much to the chagrin of myself)

I would expect Grant back also, isn't that one reason Gratton was shipped off so early?

I could go either way on Wilson, but from what I've been told from within the organization, Maki is considered a "project" that hasn't panned out.

Maki scored 14 of his 25 points in his last 21 games. He had 10 points in his last 11 games heading into the playoffs.

I don't think Maki will make the NHL, at least not in an extensive role, but he's still developing and could hit his stride over the next two years. Besides we have a duty as the parent club of the Admirals to keep them supplied with talent and make efforts to keep the team competitive. Letting Maki go unqualified after he finally starts to produce at that level doesn't really help Milwaukee when the only likely incoming prospect we have is Wilson.

Next year's team will likely look something like this:

Free Agent-C. Wilson-Hörnqvist
Maki/K. Wilson-Santorelli-Jessiman
Thuresson-Spaling-K. Wilson/Maki
Grant-Free Agent-Werner?

Franson-Lääkso
Matheson?-Free Agent
Dietrich-Yonkman/Free Agent

Dekanich
Pickard/Smith

That defense needs work, but that forward corps is going to be very competitive and is pretty strong up the middle.

What's the status of Matheson? Is he under contract with Nashville or on an AHL deal? Do the Predators have any interest in holding on to him with his performance this season?

I could not find any details on Matheson, which suggested to me that he is on an AHL deal.

That's too bad to hear about Maki. Coach Lambert raves about his progress, and it would be unusual (I think) to let someone go after taking such a huge step forward.

If Lambert is high on him, the organization will likely re-evaluate their supposed stance. I think he's still a project that's in the works. He's only 24, turning 25 this month.
