The NHL Lock-Out by Mathias Brunet

Théodore and Ribeiro will play in cities across the province of Quebec

Mathias Brunet
La Presse 16 septembre 2004

Contrary to certain rumors, the Habs' Quebecois players will not play in Europe during the lock-out. They will play here and you'll be able to see them on television every Saturday night.

José Théodore, Mike Ribeiro, Patrice Brisebois, Francis Bouillon, Pierre Dagenais, Steve Bégin and even Craig Rivet confirmed that they will play "4-vs-4" games in 32 different cities across the province this Fall.

This tour, called "La Caravane", was set up by Joel Bouchard who played defense for the New York Rangers last year and also worked part time as an analyst on the RDS network with the collaboration of producer Jean-Michel Dufaux.

Four teams (8 players per team) will play games on weekends in 34 different cities and all the profits will go to children charities. The Saturday night games will be televised on RDS.

Several other players from Quebec like Stéphane Quintal, Martin Lapointe, Mathieu Dandeneault, Donald Audette, Mathieu Garon and sometimes, certain renowned guests like Brendan Shanahan, will also participate.

From what we've learnt, Bouchard grouped the players according to their affinities and friendships. Thus, Theodore, Ribeiro and Dagenais will play on the same team. Lapointe and Dandenault, who played together in Detroit will be reunited in the Caravane with Quintal who's a good friend of Dandenault.

Several options are available for NHL players this Fall. Besides professional teams in Europe and in North America and Joel Bouchard's Caravane for players from the province of Quebec, another "4-vs-4" tour called OSHL for original stars hockey league will also be in evidence.

The OSHL will include 6 teams - Montreal, Boston, New York, Chicago, Toronto and Detroit (from the prior 1969 six-team era). The OSHL will play its games exclusively in Canada (some games should be played in Quebec City at the Pepsi Colisée).

According to their Internet Website, 113 players already accepted to play in the OSHL Tour, including Steve Sullivan, Mike Fisher, Jason Spezza, Martin Lapointe, Dominik Hasek, Jeff Friesen and Andrew Raycroft. The Habs' Jason Ward and Ron Hainsey are also on their lists and were selected by the Montreal team.

We must however take this information with a grain of salt since Spezza and Hasek are thinking of joining the Sens' school-team in Binghampton and Lapointe is already committed to Joel Bouchard's Caravane.

Certain European tours are also being organized by players' agent Pat Brisson and his clients from IMG inc. These tours would be along the same lines as the Wayne Gretzky Tours during the 1994 lock out.

As far as the WHA is concerned, their chances of survival are limited (the Quebec Nordiks amongst other teams have already folded). This new league now hopes to start its 2004-05 season at the end of November with 8 teams. On their Internet site yesterday, the founders of the WHA were denying rumors that their new league would be bought by the NHL. To say the least, they are starting on the wrong foot.

What a mess!

Just for your info,

La Caravane project is a serious one. They got MacDonald involved in it and they're sending "flyers" to every minor hockey organization.

If you (minor hockey association) want to present a game in your arena, you must submit your "candidature". Tickets will be sold $20 and 1/2 of the profit will go to the minor hockey organization and the other half to La Caravane.

It's not as if they have a huge incentive to play hard on the ice beyond bragging rights. Among other things, there'll be no body contact, Theo can devote more time to his endorsements, Ribs can dipsy doodle and lose the puck without having the coach benching him for being a hot dog, and Dagenais can float and admire the scenery to his hearts desire.

Makes it a beer league in my books.

From what I understood of Mathias Brunet's article, La Caravane will play in 32 cities across the Province and the OSHL tour (six-team-era teams) will play only in Canada, Toronto, Montreal Edmonton Vancouver etc... plus Quebec city.

They probably figured there would be a limited market in the US for this scheme at this time of the year with the NFL in full swing and with Baseball playoffs and World Series just around the corner.

I guess if they are going to play in Quebec CT, they are going to play in Winny the Bear also. Thumbs up there, these two cities have so many starving fans.

Dagenais should pay me to watch him play and Hainsey(who is on the bubble)should be honing his skills in the A,not playing shinny hockey.

Talented or not, a 4-on-4 league with profits going to charity (not that I disaprove the concept) with team regrouping based on level of "friendship" is, and will always be, a beer league. A kind of no-contact friendly all-star game without the stars. How fun.

unless they show the AHL regularly, i have no reason to re-suscribe to RDS. showing a recreational league like this doesnt matter to me.
