Time to sign McDonagh

The Canadiens should sign McDonagh. He has nothing to gain by staying on a mediocre Wisconsin team for his junior year

I'd agree if he'd had a standout year, but his season was a roller coaster so maybe it would be good for him to stay another year. We can't rush him...

Management will analyze the situation after the season...we'll see...

I don't trust this management team to analyze any situation correctly.

If you mean in general... perhaps. As the second poster said, we'll decide after the season. No rush.

If you mean to try and save this series.... Umm. No.

Personnally, though it doesn't mean anything, I didn't like his season that much. Tons of ups and downs though it seems that he was better towards the end which is a great sign.

It seems that like MaxPac, it will come down to the development camp. Wish I could see that so I can make some reports but I doubt it unless they have a day or 2 during one weekend.

I'm extremely worried to let them develop defencemen. And with the numerous up and coming d-men, it has to be a concern for everybody. Nobody was patient or had the knowledge enough to develop the d-men that we let go for nothing thinking they weren't any good.

I disliked pretty much everything that I've seen from this player at the WJC. Poor sense of judgment and all...

If signing him means he gets to grind on improving his weaknesses in Hamilton, sure. Otherwise, no thank you. Let him get his degree.

Forget it. Not saying that he won't become a good 2nd pairing defenseman, but he doesn't have "doing wonders" upside, and certainly not in 2-3 years.

That's perhaps the only reason I want McDonagh to sign. The more these 2 play together, the better.

We really need some quality young defensemen with offensive upside to support Markov on the team. Be it Weber, Subban or McDonagh if he ends up being more than a "shoot on opposing player's legs to create a turnover" type defensive D. It seems our team relies a lot on offense from our blue line yet except Markov and aging Schneider our D are not suited for that game. I hope one of them makes the team next year (most likely Weber, who's showing potential. he should have a decent year then start sucking like all our prospects, which is when we'll bring in Subban, waste him, then on the third year have McDonagh up. On the 4th there is Fisher then we can just bring a washed up D to replace Hamrlik, rince, and repeat)

He's not close to being ready....let McDonagh mature another year in College. We have plenty of depth with defensive prospects.

We should call those "Komisareks" from now on.

He doesn't even play for the Habs yet! What a bust! Why should we sign him?

McDonagh was just named co captian at Wisconsin, so I assume his coach expects him back next year.

As for nothing to gain from going to the NCAA, I don't agree. I'd rather see him in the AHL next year so he can start to adjust to the much longer schedule, but if not I don't think it will hurt him to spend one more year in the NCAA.

When can McDonagh become a UFA? If he remains in College like the whole Blake Wheeler thing..

McDonagh would need to have been drafted in 2004 in order to pull that one off. (pre cba)

That doesn't make sense, what would make it longer?

the fact that they extended the period the drafting team owns the player's rights. The rights to college players still expire.

Not sure you know what your talking about here. First off they didn't extend the period that the drafting team owns the players rights, they actually made it shorter. 2nd, NCAA players rights have always expired at least as far back as I can recall.

It used to be that you had a full year to sign your drafted NCAA players after they finished school. But they changed that to now you have only 2 months to sign your drafted NCAA players after they finish school.

Example. When the Habs signed Matt Shasby out of AAU, the Habs owned his rights over the entire following season until the next summer. If the Habs were to sign Paquet, they will only hold his rights until August 15th of this year since he just finished his NCAA career, whereas if it was the old way, the Habs would not have to sign Paquet this summer and would own his rights all through next season until next summer.

Now you can release the rights to the NCAA player so that they can sign somewhere else before August 15th. The Habs did this with Ryan Glenn who I think ended up at the rangers camp since the Habs knew they were not going to offer him a contract.
