Better Playoff Performer?

Being a fan of both players & having seen almost every minute of every playoff game that Joe Thornton & Marc Savard have played I was curious as to who is regarded as the better playoff performer?

Both have been seriously injured just before a playoff series (Thornton had a cracked rib in 2004 & Savard had a cracked back in 2008) and both have been First Line Centers in Boston

Now I know that Joe Thornton has played a Lot more playoff games than Marc Savard but I thought it would be interesting to see what people's impressions are of 2 players who have similar skills & numbers but play the game in very different ways.

Here are their numbers:

Joe Thornton

74 NHL Playoff Games
11 Goals
39 Assists
50 Points
- 13

Marc Savard

11 NHL Playoff Games
3 Goals
8 Assists
11 Points
- 1

Cheers

Not exactly a huge sample size on Savard there, but he hasn't seemed to elevate or drop off his game from the regular season, so given how brutal Thornton has been the past couple of series I'd have to give it to Savard (who is going to win this in a landslide, but the the Thornton trade was still terrible).

oh c'mon!

Savard has only played 11 playoff games in his career.

ALL of them have been against Montreal.
ALL of them have been in the first round.
4 of those points were in 1 game this year.
He didn't play his first playoff game until last year ... when he was 30.

Thornton has disappointed, but Savard's playoff reputation can't be fairly judged based on 11 games against the same team.

Agreed. They should have gotten a Much better return for him. At least they were able to salvage it somewhat by turning Primeau & Stuart into Ference & Kobasew. To bad Sturm is out for the season.

I ackowledged this in my Original Post.

Savard will be playing at Least 4 more Playoff Games this season - and they won't be against Monteal & they won't be in the First Round.

Literally every player in the league is a better playoff performer than Thornton. Everyone knows this. Savard also happens to be a top 10 forward, so there's no doubt he's better.

It doesn't matter when I make it (this year) because someone will point out (rightfully so) that Thornton has played more playoff games.

Marc Savard won't be catching him (in games played) anytime soon.

I'd hate to have to count on either of these two to bring it. Both have been between the awful to invisible range this year.

Those 4 points in game 2 for Savard, talk about invisible eh?

This is equivalent to asking "Who's better--Detroit or Columbus?" right now.

I'd still take Thornton over Savard, and it's not really close.

Yeah he played so brutal that he was only the number one centre on a team that won their series in four straight. Savard steps it up when the Bruins really need him to step it up, Kessel and Ryder destroyed the Habs enough by themselves that he wasn't really needed to step it up. And really he's still tied for sixth in playoff scoring so it's not like he didn't do anything all series.

5 Points in 4 Playoff Games This Season is "between awful & invisible"?

He's currently Tied for 6th in Playoff Points This Season - and he's only played 4 Games.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.h...ewName=summary

So by your logic there are only 5 Players that aren't "between awful & invisible".

I watched the entire series with the exception of the 1st period of game 3. I saw how the series played out and why it went the way it did. I just gave an honest unbiased opinion, obviously it wasn't going to cut it with some fans but i try not to let that influence my posts.

Well of course, because offensive stats are all that matter.

So far in This Season's Playoffs:

Thornton -4
Savard +/-0

So what exactly are you basing it on?
