Scott Hartnell was named as one of the top five "dirtiest players" By peers

From Flyers OTF:

In the current issue of Sports Illustrated, which hits newsstands today, Flyers forward Scott Hartnell was named as one of the top five "dirtiest players" in the NHL in a poll of 324 players. Hartnell came in fifth on the list behind, in order, Chris Pronger, Steve Ott, Jarkko Ruutu and Steve Avery.

Hartnell was reached for comment while driving across Canada yesterday, and responded with his typical humor.

“I will take it. I guess any press is good press," he said. "If the players are talking about me, I think that’s a good thing.”

EDIT: lol the article put avery's name as steve

Hartnell, who totaled 143 penalty minutes this season, added he doesn't really consider himself that dirty of a player.

"I play the game hard. I think I play it fair. But I guess maybe after the whistles and stuff, that’s where I might get a bad name.”

As for taking over the top spot in the future?

“I don’t know if my coaches would like me for going for #1. I think a couple of these guys are going to be disliked for a long time," he said. "I will just keep chirping and getting in players faces."

He can say what he wants, that's not 4 players you want to be associated with unless it's 'fellow Stanley Cup champions' or 'future Hall of Famers' of which there is only 1 of.

I agree with Hartnell. I'm a little surprised he's so high on the list.

He'll run a goalie or many, and stir the pot after the whistle, but i don't see him as dirty as some of those guys known for cheap shots resulting in injuries

That's because we're Flyers' fans. I don't see that either, but I have orange glasses on. Sort of like how the crowd who doesn't see Sidney Crosby as a whiner even though he topped a similar, player-made list.

But in more stunning fashion, they glorified this. They included this in their email newsletter. I wonder if the Ducks, Rangers, Stars and Senators did the same thing.

I consider him dirty, but as it says above he's the "get it done" kind of dirty. His job is to stir the pot and in today's NHL crashing the net and throwing your glove is considered dirty.

He doesn't do it anymore really, but when he was one Nashville he threw his knee around a lot.

Fair enough. I consider myself to be a fairly objective hockey fan, so I don't really agree that because Hartnell's a Flyer I see him differently than when he played for Nashville.

This poll result makes me think he might do a little more dirty work than I can see from my television/computer.

I think Briere's dirtier than Hartnell. For all his hard nosed play, you rarely see Hartnell throw an elbow or get his stick up high.

That pronger took #1 is interesting. People talk about reputation a lot but his is on a whole nother level. Also interesting that the other four are all notorious agitators. Not saying hartnell doesn't deserve #5 (I'd put him between 6 and 10), but you have to wonder how much the votes were swayed by trash talking, which shouldn't be considered dirty. That said, it's probably hard to distinguish the two if you play in the NHL. Certain guys' actions will stand out more if you're just hating his guts every time you play against him.

He may be a bit dirty, and he's definitely a pest, but you will be hard pressed to find many plays where Hartnell committed an egregiously dangerous deed. Same with Avery

I don't see him as top-5 but he's definitely up there. He takes every opportunity to run goalies, he throws elbows, etc.

I don't really think Hartnell's that dirty. He does some stupid things, sure, but he doesn't do anything that egregious.

Reputation probably gets him this dishonor.

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there - he often leads with his knees when a player tries to step around him. That's why he gets on this list if you ask me.

kaleta and tootoo i think should be higher than hartnell.

i also think that there's a pretty substantial drop off from the top four players and hartnell. pronger has his penchant for elbows (deliberate or not), and ott, ruutu and avery probably make my list of top three hated players (ruutu is tops though).

i guess the argument in defense of hartnell is that his stats even this out--he was a thirty goal scorer this year...

Ken Linseman was a dirty hockey player. Claude Lemieux was a dirty hockey player. Scott Hartnell is nothing like those two. They really need to come to a consensus as to what dirty is because Hartnell plays a physical game, sometimes to the point of stupidity, but I'd hardly call him dirty.
