Carter generally is not one to be a social butterfly in the media.

I haven't read this yet but Wayne Fish has a column today:
Quote:

With rare exception, the expected standard of excellence for the Flyers always has been high. After 42 years of operation, they have the second-highest winning percentage in hockey history, trailing only the fabled Montreal Canadiens.

The Flyers have missed the playoffs only eight times, been to as many conference finals as any NHL team since their inception. Yet, in those seasons when hopes are elevated and then not met, there’s a sense of disappointment. Such was the case this past campaign. Despite a 99-point season and exciting play by some promising rookies, the Flyers couldn’t get out of the first round of postseason play after last year’s surprise run to the Eastern finals. In the postmortem, blame was placed and mistakes admitted.

The Flyers’ future still looks bright, particularly with the quick development of young prospects such as Claude Giroux, Darroll Powe and Ryan Parent. But for the Flyers to make a serious run at a Stanley Cup in 2010, some things have to change.

Here are five of them

Interesting, sign Khabibulin and Bouwmeester, then be more responsible about the salary cap. Seems like a conflict of interests.

I like how he quotes J-Bo's probably price tag to be 7-8 million then suggests the Flyers dump Randy Jones' 3 million cap hit and not re-sign Andrew Alberts and his massive 1.2 million cap hit. Half way there!

The link isn't working but looks like Jones is having a procedure, per Gormley. The headline mentions Powe, too.

This is all I could get to work (lost is listed at 7:42 PM):

Well, the basic idea within the article is to move some of those big forward assets (Briere, Lupul and Gagne are mentioned) in favor of some strong goaltending and defense. (But, you're right, it does seem odd to mention Alberts in that salary-dump discussion.)

I'm surprised how prominently Bouwmeester is mentioned in that article. There are too many teams after him with too much money to spend.

...and, aside from that, we have defense maturing. We have nothing in terms of goaltending.

So, I'd much rather throw some serious cash at a goaltender than discuss putting 7-9m on a defenseman when we have Coburn, Parent and Sbisa getting comfortable and without long deals. (All three of which have more playoff experience than Bouwmeester, by the way. )

Another one bites the dust...

I could have sworn I said something about injuries.

Richards
Carter
Jones

...who's next?

This is from the Philly.com. Courier-Post link still isn't operating properly.

Quote:
Breakaways. Defenseman Randy Jones saw a hip specialist Monday in Nashville and will have surgery next week, the Flyers said. There was no timetable for his recovery. ... The team said forward Darroll Powe also had his hip examined Monday. He will be reexamined after two to three weeks of rest to determine if surgery is needed.

I often get confused as to what FTW stands for given certain contexts. It could be "For The Win." But, given this picture, it clearly stands for "F The World." Which, coincidentally, I find myself saying often when I see Jones.....

Giroux article in the Daily News...

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/spor...s__Giroux.html

Quote:
CLAUDE GIROUX isn't really sure when it happened.

But somewhere during the grind of the regular season, something clicked. For Giroux, a 21-year-old gifted scorer who can see the whole ice, it was all about putting the pieces together.

There is a good chance that happened under John Paddock, the first-year Phantoms head coach. Paddock was previously the head coach of the Ottawa Senators, Giroux's hometown team while playing junior hockey across the river in Gatineau, Quebec.

Many had Giroux penciled into the Flyers' opening-night lineup at the start of training camp in September. But by the end of the 3-week camp, the high expectations had dissipated. He simply wasn't NHL-ready yet.

And he knew it.

Now, looking ahead to next season, there is a palpable buzz surrounding Giroux. This time, it is warranted. He has shown he is for real.

i could easily see lupul and briere and draft picks traded for goaltending help, and a dman.

man just imagine all the money we could save/spend. i'd love to see both of them gone.

oh i agree with fish, better goaltending and better d is for sure the way to go. man the cup would so be ours.
