Matt Stajan (good 2nd to 3rd line center with upside, had his best yr last yr, only 25) Tomas Kaberle (top 10 dmen in league on an incredible contract for 2 more yrs) Luke Schenn (poised rookie dmen, played top pairing minutes in all situations, reliable) 7th overall in 09 (this pick will no doubt become a top prospect)
Prospect Dale Mitchell (built like a fire hydrant, on fire in playoffs)
Prospect Joel Champagne (considered a 3rd line centerman with size that excels in faceoffs)
Vinny Lecavalier (allstar C, franchise player, owed too much money for too long) 2nd overall in 09 (Should be able to nab one of Tavares/Hedman/Dushene)
At 1st glance it looks like quantity for quality. But Toronto offers alot of quality pieces to Tampa. Tampa supposably needs to get out from under Lecavalier's contract (before in actually kicks in) as they seem to be the next team that might be under the microscope in terms of relocating. They are already looking for new investors to stay afloat.
I'm not sure how many other teams that could offer Tampa a deal such as this and be able to take on Vinny's albatros of a contract.
And yes I understand alot of Toronto fans don't want to include Schenn in the deal but you have to give to get. Also if Toronto really wanted, they could draft Hedman with that pick potentially. Maybe have a Stralman-Hedman pairing set for the future? Just a thought. Toronto could also try and grab one of the top dmen in the offseason (Komisarek, Jbo)
this trade seems more logical than the OP;s
Toronto could very well end up with Vinny n Hedman, and almost be there.
Supporting cast n a Goalie.
puts Tampa into Rebuild mode AGAIN. but hell they have building blocks to be a winning team.
works both ways. specially since toronto wont be losing money anytime soon. unlike hockey games.
It has nothing to do with the cap, it is a budget problem, this guy Len Barrie is a real estate flim-flam man and the Tampa ownership is very shaky !!! They do not have the luxury of time for a long-term re-build. They must win now or the franchise is toast. Most teams in the NHL are facing budget issues NOT cap issues. That is why salary dumps plus Kaberle's contract just may work.
What I'm getting at is, if they have the chance at Tavares, why would they trade both Tavares and Vinny. Trading Vinny and replacing him with Tavares saves about 4million dollars, allowing them to add defenceman to stay near the cap floor. Trading Tavares and Vinny seems illogical, and trading Tavares at all seems counter productive, as you are getting a potential star with an entry level contract.. They have 17 players signed and are at the cap floor. If they intend on staying at the cap floor and want to make the playoffs, they will struggle hard.
