Injuries Updated (May 13, 2009)

No surgery for Powe. Gagne and Nitty info, too.

Quote:
Flyers defenseman Randy Jones had successful hip surgery Wednesday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.

Jones had inflamed tissue and scar tissue removed from his right hip. That’s the same hip he underwent surgery on last fall to repair a labrum tear. Today’s surgery was performed by Thomas Byrd.

General manager Paul Holmgren said Jones was expected to make a full recovery in 4-6 weeks.

“Jones had immediate relief from the surgery they did today,” Holmgren said.

Not surprising, explains some his lack of mobility as the season went on.

He never looked healthy. If Jones goes on LTIR the whole season, we still have Vaananen and Upshall for the playoffs. It was a dumb move to let him keep playing and then make other boneheaded moves to get cap space to keep an unhealthy Jones on the roster.

In other news,

Richards had left shoulder surgery today and should take about 10 weeks to recover.

The thing though is that he was deemed healthy and cleared to play... There was no way that the Flyers could continue to keep him on LTIR. Even if they could, they would have had to know that the scar tissue problem and other problems subsequent to the surgery were going to occur, which they obviously were not since they hadn't happened at that time -- If I am correct, scar tissue often breaks up without much problem... and is of little concern other than an initial fear of a relapse.

Also, a healthy Jones was a good thing... and the space was there due to other injuries going on LTIR as he and Parent were cleared. Parent was able to be reassigned to the 'A', and I honestly believe that Homer thought that a deal could be completed to relieve much of the Cap problem... In the end, other than buying and selling at the TDL, the Cap dried up the usual market and other teams didn't want to take on added Cap in return, nor were they willing to give up prospects that could save Cap space in the future... at least not for the players that the Flyers could afford and were willing to move.

I believe that it was a circumstantial situation and not a bonehead move... I see Homer's hands being cuffed and his gambles on waiving players were forced on him and the odds were not in his favor... Lack of Cap experience in the NHL led to bad foresight on Homer's side, and the Flyers getting bit in the arse due to it. Going forward. let's hope that Homer has learned from it, and doesn't allow the Flyers to be forced to make moves they don't want to make.
