It's possible that realizing how long it took for him to get up to speed this season might prompt him to want to join a team for training camp and play an entire season. Niedermayer felt the same way (though Burke did come out and say he wouldn't give the same timeframe) after playing his half-season.
Or, it could be another summer (and fall... and winter...) of Mats being Mats.
Nobody forced any GM to wait for Sundin to make a decision. If you are interested in him, make him an offer, put a deadline for him to accept or reject, and if doesn't respond by said deadline, look at other options. The longer you wait for him, or another player in the same type of situation, the more difficult it might be to look into other options.
As an aside, if the Sundin situation upset people so much, perhaps the next collective agreement should have a deadline for players to sign if they want to play in that particular season. I believe there is a deadline for RFA's. Why not UFA's as well?

And if we've learned anything about Sundin it's that when he says he won't rush it, he means it.
Let's hope he doesn't repeat last seasons antics. I hate that crap.
I'd still like to know how a guy saying "I haven't made up my mind yet" is 'antics'. He said he'd take his time and make the right decision for him and the media (and we're included in that here) jumped on every rumour, every sighting, every little word he said and blew it up into a melodrama. Sundin did none of that. We did that. And then we have the gaul to blame him.
ffff sundin that guy things he is Mario lemieux or something. he is not even a 4th line centre anymore, he should just retire, so sick of hearing that he doesn't want to make a decision. every 30 teams in the league should make the decision for him this time. He sucked for vancouver this year. was not worth what they paid him.

I think it's considered "antics" when you won't waive your NTC because Mat's "didn't want to be a rental player" and " wanted to be with a team for the full year". He then waits until the season is 3 months old to be paid like one of the top 3 players in the league on a per game basis, and then use the next 30 games as you personal training camp.
Mats can still be very productive, and if he was committed to a team for the full year and would show up in shape from day 1 - is still worth big money. I just wouldn't commit to him if he can't commit to a team by the start of training camp. Anything else is a blatant "cash grab" on his part IMO.
