Bernier Resigns with the Canucks

Just heard it on team 1040 like some of you. Terms not released.

Good player with a lot of potential. probably a 2 year 2.25M, I don't believe they can cut his salary by much more.

I'll wait to celebrate after the terms are released and hear it from another source. Good to hear so far though, nice to see Gillis is still busy.

Wow, they didn't waste any time. I'm really glad that he's going to be hanging around. You see the value his kind of player has to the team come playoff time. I'll be interested to see what kind of money/terms he gets based on his great work ethic but slightly disappointing numbers.

i dunno, why wld he take a paycut, he's already supposed to get 2.5 next year. i cant see him doing it for a 2 year contract, but we will see.

i like this though, i can see bernier being a 50+ point player next year or 2010-2011

probably a 2 or 3 year deal like the one he signed Backes to. Maybe 2M or a little over, I don't think a smaller offer is allowed with the CBA IIRC.

The Gillis/Vigneault presser just confirmed it's a 2 year deal. Salary wasn't mentioned though.

I think 2/4.5m is approx fair to both sides. He should be a 40+ pt scorer soon, especially if the team lets a couple of other people go, hint, hint...

Good to hear! He played really well during the playoffs, for the most part.

Many agree that it seems logical that he would follow in Kesler's footsteps. Not a durastic paycut, just a small one because as good a guy he was for our team, he was overpaid by about 500K.

My guess would be 2yrs/4.5m.

I believe he will still be a RFA at the end of this deal as well since he will be under 27 with only 6 seasons rather than 7.

I may be mistaken, but isnt there a provision in the new CBA where you can take a player to reverse arbitration, or ask for less than they are currently making?

Also, after Kesler played out the contract he was offered by Philly, he resigned for a smaller deal.

Yes you can take players to arbitration but I believe their salaries can only be reduced by a set amount.

As for anyone saying Bernier couldn't sign below a certain amount, that is wrong. Bernier could've signed a 10 year deal at the league minimum if he wanted, there's is nothing in the CBA to stop him. The Canucks however would have had to offer him a QO and he could chose to sign that. Instead they worked out a two year deal, likely at a bit of a compromise. My guess is it's for $2.25M per.

In keeping with club policy, salary numbers were not disclosed, but some media outlets are reporting he'll receive $2 million per year.

Good news if true.
