rangers need a scorer and have defensive prospects, as a ranger fan i would do it and with nas coming of the cap we could resign him
Rangers would need to add. It's hard for me to say this too, since I haven't missed a single shift from Marc's NHL career, and know how freaking good he's going to become.
Staal is a very good player and would improve Boston's D, but Kessel is the only true sniper on the team. Plus, if Boston were to go out and get a Dman they need more of a puck rushing one.

I like Kessel alot and as an organizational need, he represents exactly what this team can use.
That said, I'm not moving Staal for him. We have some solid defensive prospects, no question, but we would then have a serious need for a legit #1/#2 type defenceman that Staal is right now.
I'm not into creating one hole to address another.
As for value, I think that this point MAYBE we would have to add a little something to the mix, but I also think that we have not yet seen the best from Staal (nor have we from Kessel). It's just been my opinion that top defenceman are harder to come by than 1st line wingers.
I'd like to add Kessel, but Staal isn't the guy I'd want to part with.

Fair enough, but I think it does take Staal plus to get Kessel from the B's. I also would understand why Rangers management and/or fans would not want to make that trade.
I honestly think that Staal is one of the most underrated players in the league. He is young yet, and his game still needs polish. But, in time, he is going to be an absolute monster (not that he isn't already).
Kessel looks like he could get 40 - 50 goals, but I think I'd rather have Staal if I were Sather.

i dont think the rangers would have to add anything at all..
I think it's perfectly fine valuewise and that neither side needs to add anything. I think you have to look at what your team needs the most to really determine which you'd rather have. If I have solid defense then I want Kessler, if I have solid scoring already then I want Staal. However, if I had to build a franchise around either one I think I'd take Staal, stud Dmen are more important than stud goal scorers. Neither are absolutely elite, but both are studs or at least studs in the making.
I think this deal would help the B's and actually hurt the Rangers and it's soley based upon the cap implications. Kessler is due a big pay day if I'm not mistaken and staal is still on his entry lvel contract correct? The B's have a number of players they need to resign in the next year or 2 and this would probably give them the cap room to keep all the rest. Basically they are probably going to lose somebody and this way they get back a stud dman instead of the crap another team might offer them when the B's are over a barrel. For the Rangers, even though Nasland did retire and that's some cap relief, they are still not in a friendly cap position and THEY would now have to give Kessler his heafty pay raise, thus eating up much of the cap relief they got from Naslund retiring. plus this seriously weakens the Rangers defense, what has been their weakest position for years. They are finally getting strong on defense and this would be a heavy blow to that strength.
This is an outsiders view of ti anyways. I can certainly understand if either side feels very strongly AGAINST the trade.
Value wise it isn't too far off, but I think it fits the Rangers needs moreso than the Bruins.
That being said, I think Staal will be a Ranger for life. He's been stellar defensively (taking his age into account of course) and he's starting to put more effort into the offensive side of the game. He has a highly underrated ability to rush the puck up the ice.
I'm a huge Kessel fan, but I think Staal is far too important for the Rangers future to be moved.
Man, when Staal was still available at #12 in the 05 draft and they announced that a trade had been made for the pick, I was jumping for joy because I just knew that Clarke had made a deal to move up and take him. Damn I wanted the Flyers to draft him and though I know he'llbe a thron in our sides for years to come being on the Rangers, I'm glad he went there so I get to see him more often during the season.
So IF/when he reaches his potential, he will be as good as Kessel is now.
What a silly thing to say. Kessel is a one dimensional forward. Sure he is great at putting the puck in the net, but the guy wouldn't know his own zone if it bit him. Marc Staal is one of the best defensive defenders in the game, and he is starting to learn the offensive game very well. I will guarantee you, under Tortorella he will have 30 points next season, and be stellar on the defensive side as well.
