Report: Five NHL teams might consider signing the Sedin twins this summer

http://www.theprovince.com/Sports/fr...107/story.html

Quote:
I've done my own analysis and I'm not concerned," said Barry. "There could be as many as five teams with interest."

It may not get that far, as Gillis said recently he wants to sign the Sedins long-term and build around them.

As for the five interested teams, Barry wouldn't elaborate, but a look at roster commitments, salary cap issues for next season and financial wherewithal, the likely suspects are Toronto, Minnesota, Montreal, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

All need upgrades on offence and all have the cap room to accommodate the anticipated $12 million hit.

Toronto is clearly the most likely suitor, with Leafs GM Brian Burke having drafted the Sedins when he was in Vancouver. Minnesota may still have a shot at re-signing star winger Marian Gaborik, with newly hired GM Chuck Fletcher vowing to bring an up-tempo style of play to the Wild. If so, that would preclude a run at Danny and Hank.

Montreal has a ton of cap room and most of its top six forwards are UFAs, but the Habs are also believed to be in the Vincent Lecavalier sweepstakes. Taking on his $10 million per annum contract wouldn't leave much left for the Sedins.

L.A. badly needs goals, but the word out of Tinseltown is their top priority is Gaborik and they are also interested in Lecavalier. Atlanta, well, they have the cap room and desperate need to get back to the playoffs.

Pure speculation, not even a rumor. The Sedins aren't going to fit the mold of the player that Brian Burke is looking to build this team around.

While I won't comment on the Brian Burke 'mold' part, I agree that it is pretty obvious that this is only speculation from the writer and nothing else. He seems to have picked 5 random teams.

I like how former Burke players are always tied to him. Remember those Pronger rumours earlier in the year?

so this writer i guess had nothing to write about today so he looked at the 5 teams with the most cap space and speculated that those teams would be looking to add a free agent; great journalist here.

Agreed on all counts.

The "mold" part makes no sense; Burke likes point producers as much as anyone else, he certainly doesn't intend on building an entire team out of grit. However, pure speculation.

In other news, 25 teams might not be considering signing the Sedins. Details to follow.

Sure they would be nice to have but realistically we need to save that money for when we are ready to compete.... Like thew year following htis season.

Much rather go after Pahlsson, Komisarek and one of Camm/Gaborik/Hossa

Why not? They're smart, talented hockey players who have good size and can cycle like nobody's business. Plus Burke did draft them once upon a time...

I don't understand the hate for these two. They are both excellent first line players.

For between 9-10 combined for the two I'd be ecstatic to have them.

Well they were lower on the Vancouver pecking order until recently, so I think they're really coming along now.

Ideally we're developing our own first liners but if management wanted to bring them in I wouldn't be too upset.

depends on term...they are 28 yrs old, not old at all...still fast, strong, can forecheck and hang on to the puck...solid offensive consistent numbers...will elevate a winger who plays with them...

if we don't become a cup contender for 3-5 years then what's the problem with their salary, especially if you can flip Kabs or Kubina which will create cap space...

Burke did gymnastics to draft these two and I think he is happy with their game now also...

I think Burke will table an offer if Van doesn't lock them up before July 1....and I welcome it.

these guys have game.

no matter the pecking order I didn't think they did much in the post season until this year.

I don't mind them either but I also don' mind keeping the path their on.
