Russian media: Habs Offer Contract & Captaincy To Kovalev. Koivu no longer in plans

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=280075

Quote:
A Russian sports newspaper reports that the Montreal Canadiens have offered the team's captaincy to pending unrestricted free agent Alex Kovalev and that Saku Koivu is no longer in plans for the team.

According to Sovietsky Sport, the Canadiens don't intend to re-sign Koivu and would opt to re-sign Kovalev to a one-year deal worth between $6 million and $7.5 million. The story also claims that Kovalev would be awarded the captaincy.
Mod: I changed the thread title. TSN is reporting that the Russian media is reporting this; as it stood, it appeared that this was a TSN report (and thus confirmation), which it is not at this point.

I will be surprised if that is true, mainly because of the ammount of money that is said to have been offered to him....

He was their best forward in the Boston series, so it makes sense.

It's a shame about Koivu, but he'll get a chance to prove them wrong.

I would take that with a grain of salt. I very much believe that Koivu is still in Montreal's plans

Kovalev alternates between good and marginal seasons-correct? With that in mind, I think he's due for a quality campaign next year, so the timing is right!

If true all I have to say is, give me a scotch on the rocks, hold the rocks. Oh what the hell, just give me the whole damned bottle.

If this turns out to be true, and verified by the time the draft rolls around, Gainey's really gonna hear it from the fans.

Koivu belongs in Montreal.

I don't know whats more disturbing, losing our beloved captain or signing Kovalev to 6-7.5 mil a year

Though Koivu is starting to decline, perhaps its the right time. I always imagined that if Koivu left that Komisarek would be captain and he's also a UFA.

Yes....we are going to give Kovalev a 2million $ raise after the terrible season he had. Makes a bunch of sense. We are also going to let go of Koivu and have Plekanec, the girly man...as number 1 center.

Anyone who believes this is nuts.

When was the last time captaincy was assigned by a GM in Montreal, let alone one who sent home the player in question to sort out his life?

It's BS.

It's not even the fact that Kovalev would be wearing the C that has me laughing hysterically...

Holy ****, $6mil to $7.5mil for Kovalev?!

God speed, Montreal...

Agree 100%. This is the guy who the GM sent home, during a stretch play-off drive, and asked him to think if he wanted to keep playing hockey. Sounds like the perfect guy to make your team captain.

Nothing against Russian newspapers, but if I'm TSN I'm not running a story with that as the sole support.

He won't be come July 1st if he has any intention of re-signing any of his players or adding new ones. He's already said he won't be coach next season and players aren't going to sign with a team before they know what they're getting into coach-wise.

Not to mention the current captain was voted in by the players, Kovalev has done nothing to earn a $2M raise, Gainey has gone to bat for Koivu on numerous occasions and kept him around when he could have traded him and actually received assets in return, Kovalev was almost run out of town this past season, etc, etc.

I can see Koivu not returning, most likely by his own choice, but if this team signs Kovalev for $6M+ and gives him the captaincy... I can't say I'll quit on them but I won't be nearly as forgiving of their failures.

This is perfect timing for that to happen. Any sooner and he may have overshadowed Mikko. But Mikko has grown to be the leader of our team and really matured off the ice, so I know he could handle having his (much) older brother playing on the team.

What the Canadiens need is a Canadian Captain. Havnt they gone through enough losing with a Euro wearing the C there?

TSN must be really desperate for some news if they pick up a shady Russian online publication as their sole source.

There was a time in the last decade that Brian Savage was a mainstay on the team's top line. The problems of this team go far deeper than what country the captain was born in.
