Krutov vs. Larionov vs. Makarov

Talent-wise, who was the best member of the famed KLM Line?

Yeah, both Krutov and Larionov were great, but they didn't have the skills that Makarov possessed.

Other then Kharlamov, I think Makarov is the best Russia-born forward of all time.

Really? Makarov was definitely the best. But I think Krutov/Larionov is a lot closer than you noted.

Makarov is somewhat different then your normal winger. He could score goals but he was not a pure goal scorer. He was an exceptional play making winger, much like Jagr. He had the skills to beat you one on one, at high speed and all the usual Russian traits you'd expect, dekes, tricks, skating. Unlike most wingers who play the game up and down the ice, Makarov could also move side to side.

Krutov was as close to a power forward as you were going to get from the Russian system of hockey back then. Nick named the Tank for good reason.

Larionov was the play maker and main defensive aspect of the line.

I remember as a kid Makarov was called the Russian Gretzky. The Russian league at the time only counted the primary assist (not sure if they still do or not). His stats are very impressive even without the secondary assists. Makarov was good before the KLM line existed.

Makarov was a better playmaker than Larionov and a near equal goalscorer to Krutov.

Here are their numbers during their years together(Mostly together, although Larionov showed up a bit late)

Keep in mind Soviets did not record Secondary assists at the time, so Larionov's numbers look a good deal lower than they should compared to Krutov, and Makarov's likely would be even higher.

They started registering secondary assists in USSR's Supreme League since circa 1975 but they were vastlly ignored and most goals went unassisted because of deflections/rebounds which was why, unlike the NHL, goals considerably outnumbered assists. The trend stayed on until mid 90s.
