Vladimir Malenkykh

What's the deal with this guy? He wants to much money? Question is...could he improve? Sounds to me like it's now of never....

http://www.russianprospects.com/publ...?player_id=139

The Pittsburgh Penguins picked Vladimir with their seventh pick, 157th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Since being drafted, Vladimir developed into a solid defenseman and is currently ready to make the transition to the NHL. He will not be that flashy first or second defenseman in the NHL, but will rather be that third or fourth defenseman who does all the little things right to help his team. He pitches in on offense and plays solid defense and with his size and talent will transition those skills to the NHL. Surprisingly, the Penguins once again failed to sign Malenkykh to a deal in the summer of 2003 and he will remain in Russia. The young defenseman is ready to make the transition and it is unclear what is holding it up.

Anybody know the history of his dealing with the Pens?

He doesn't want to play in Wilkes-Barre and the Pens aren't willing to guarantee him a spot in Pittsburgh.

That's to the best of my knowledge.

Thats basically it. The Pens want to give him a two way deal, he wants a one way deal. I don't understand why they gave a one way deal to Vladmir Vujtek but won't give one to Malenkykh, but I guess that's why I'm not a GM.

They can't give Malenkykh a one-way deal, for the same reasons that Malkin can't demand a one-way deal.

I don't know if it's that he just doesn't want to come to the NHL, or that he isn't good enough. There was an old, old article from back in like, 2001 with Malenkykh where he said he was in negotiations with the Penguins but ultimately would decide to stay at least one more year. Obviously, that was 3 years ago. So he IS interested.

Could also be that the Penguins are showing luke-warm interest in him, I know that at the beginning of 2002 they merely offered him a tryout contract, not an entry-level deal.

Not like he's hurting his development. Lada is the top defensive team in the 2nd best league in the world and Malenkykh is their workhorse blueliner. When he's ready, which I hope is soon, I'll be excited to see what he can bring to the table.

Frankly I think we'll never see Malenkykh over here. He looks to be a solid defensemen, but some players just don't come over.

Such as?

The only Penguins example I can think of is Jan Alinc.

Just imho. Players in AHL have about 100K-150K or something like this. Players like Malenkykh have about 250K-400K in RSL. There is no guarantee that he will play in NHL but if he go to AHL he lose his spot in RSL team. May be he wants to play for Penguins but he doesn't want to reduce his salary without guarantee about his future.

It's much less than that if you're on a two-way entry level contract. I'm almost certain that Beech and Whitney make 35k in the minors.

Yeah but where would Malenkyhk's signing bonus factor into that?

Anyone know how much Umberger's being paid while he's playing in the AHL? For some reason I think he can make over 100k for playing a full season there.

I think the pens should just bite the bullet on this one and give him the dude his money he's looking for. Cause over the years how many bums have we signed who had hefty contracts... Holzinger etc

Yeh, he'd be a great addition to the lineup.

Now all we need is the league to start up again.

U have a bad day or what?

I wasn't replying to the first post, i was replying to what others are saying.

If he's as good as people say, he would be a great addition to the lineup. Cuz there is no way he is gonna sign a 2way deal so he'd have to be on the big club, i am sure he has the stablility and toughness also the defensive awareness to make the opening night roster anyway. But that would be something we'd all have to wait see.

Man your a pretty negative guy, u lose a bet or something? bad day? ..bad life?
