Stamkos has just as much potential as Tavares. Bob Mackenzie even said last year that he spoke to many NHL general managers and they viewed Stamkos as the better NHL prospect.
For teams drafting this high, they are probably lacking in quite a few areas. Do you want a kid whose touted for his all around game and leadership? Or a kid who can only score?
Unlesss you have the pieces there already, Id still pick stamkos over tavares if i was to build a team around one of them.
you guys are all nuts 23 goals and 46 points do not a star make on a team with quite a bit of offensive talent. the Isles have far less and I'll guarantee Tavares does better as a rookie. now watch all the losers coming out making excuses for Stamkos. but I'll tell you this if he was as good as you all think you wouldnt need to make excuses now would you? how good could he be if they had Vinny and St Louis and Malone and Stamkos and just beat out the Isles who had DiPietro for all of 2 games. go ahead now go and make your excuses for Stamkos now
Just a Q, if Tavares is drafted by NYI, and only scores a measly 25g, will you be let down? Will you want to trade him to the team with the 1st overall, if it isn't NYI?
I loved Tavares at the WJC. I also wasn't impressed by Hedman.
However, I see trading Stamkos and a second, just as insurance for Tavares as a clear mistake in the making. If only for the fact that this is a deep draft and whoever is picked 32nd should have a good probably of being a player.
There's still definitely the possibility of the Islanders taking Hedman or even Duchense first.
It's not about getting the best players, it's about getting the right players.
In my opinion Tampa would be crazy to trade Stamkos for Tavares/Hedman. All 3 players should turn out to be great but Stamkos has already proven that he can play in the NHL and succeed (as evidence: his play in the second half and World Championship).
Last year he was touted to be the next franchise centermen in the mold of Steve Yzerman. So why give up on him so early?
Tavares/Hedman for all their talent still haven't proven themselves at the NHL level thus there is still a risk that they could bust/dissapoint (Tavares has skating issues, Hedman perhaps may have trouble adjusting to game over here in North America).
Taking in consideration the 2nd round pick from Tampa in the original proposal, which could turn out to be a Klingberg/Erixon/Budish/Panik, the deal is heavily in favor of NYI.
Tampa would be big losers as:
Stamkos + Klingberg/Erixon/Budish/Panik > 1st overall pick (Tavares/Hedman)
so a first overall(stamkos) and 2nd overall for a first overall when the top two in the draft is a split on whos betterr???? Isles take this and laugh to the bank
Well this thread has backfired from the starters point of view. As a Lightning fan I wouldn't give Stamkos straight up for the pick, much less add a 2nd. Posted via Mobile Device
Thing is, Stamkos has been marketed heavily in TBAY and the Isles are already hyping up JT (along with the rest of the league); ultimately, the trade fails purely from a marketing standpoint.
