first of all, doesn't he have a NTC or a NMC? If not that changes things... but if he has one, and I'd assume he does, there will only be a limited number of teams that he'll waive his clause to go to... he won't be shopped on the open market, and that will effect his value.

Secondly, a $7.5mill multiyear deal isn't something that a lot of teams have room for... so not only would the team that he wants to go to need to have the necessary room to add him, they would need to move back the type of contracts to make it fit.

This would, for example, eliminate the trade proposal above by Columbus... it's already been said that they are having financial problems and Rick Nash's contract is already a big one for them to carry... how are they going to add another big money player like that?

Given his contract, and his NTC/NMC, my guess is that the return won't be some rebuilding package of picks and top prospects... there aren't many teams that can afford to take that contract without sending significant salary back... and the few teams that can, are likely all in rebuilding modes of their own, having that kind of open payroll space, and it's unlikely that Heatley is going to waive his NTC to go to such teams.

So my guess is that the return will be a lot more like the original trade that brought him to Ottawa (a 1-for-1 type deal sending a key player with a big contract the other way).... and considering his NTC, my guess is that the options will be limited.

Calgary is always in rumours when it comes to Heatley... but a trade there IMO is more likely going to be a Phaneuf/Heatley trade more so than picks and prospects or lesser contracts.... or with Edmonton for Visnovsky/Souray+ type deals - basically sending a big contract back.

With the cap uncertainty now heading into the next couple years, coupled with the lack of teams that actually have available cap space, as well as Heatley's NTC or NMC, add it all up and I don't see more than a very few options where he can be moved, and the return will likely be a big contract coming the other way.

Phaneuf for Heatley makes a lot of sense to me....
I still highly doubt Heatley is going anywhere, but Phaneuf for Heatley does make sense, especially if Calgary wants to sign Bouwmeester.

However, Calgary already has a similar player in Iginla, and I suspect the Oilers would make the hard pitch because of their lack of proven forwards.

so... assuming this is true, who can afford his cap hit.

We'll limit to the west, because there is no way Murray is stupid enough to trade him in-conference and the TSN article states that Heatley is believed to be looking at a Western Conference team.

Ducks: Ryan+ or Perry+
Flames: Phaneuf+ (i really hope not)
Hawks: I'd hope we ask for Keith
Avs: Duchene +
BJs: Filatov++
Stars: I dont see it, but it would have to includ #8 overall
Detroit: no way
Oil: Dont have the one key piece needed.
Kings: Have a lot of pieces, but are they willing to give up multiple good young pieces for that "next step"?
Wild: dont see it.
Nashville: salary-no
Yotes: salary-no
Sharks: no space
Blues: see LA
Canucks: Hodgson+

It's time for the "I'll trade all of the spare parts off of my favorite team for Heatley" posts.

That Richards contract though...hard for us to deal with. You'd have to take Jason Smith as well.

This is the kind of deal the Sens will be looking for. Not Lupal, not Phaneuf (well maybe actually).

Just so people can stop making up the $5.5 million rumors, here's proof he isn't asking for 5.5.

if it was a Phaneuf/Heatley deal you may see it straight up not Phaneuf+... as Phaneuf's contract is cheaper and his is several years younger (not that Heater is old)

I understand that Heatley wanted out of Atlanta. But what's his excuse for Ottawa? Yeeeeesh - get a grip, you signed a contract..... honour it.

How about Phaneuf and Cammys rights for Heater? Then we move Jokinen back to FLA (ha, ha) for Bo's rights and a 2nd or 3rd. Backlund on the second line or between Iggy and Heater on the top line......I gotta go lay down for a bit.

To the people who have said trade him for Toews or Keith, in what world can Chicago afford to add salary? The only way Chicago could add Heatley was if Campbell was going the other way and we all know that isn't going to happen.

Marleau isn't even close to Dany Heatley's value. They could have had him for Redden last year.

You should probably start preparing yourself now for the crushing letdown when you see the package Heatley does bring in.

Why not? Unless the Sens are looking to blow up their roster, some mega package deal isn't likely.

You end up with a high salary start swap as the most likely scenario.

Something like Phaneuf or Marleau actually makes the most sense unless they tell Heatley to suck it up and he ain't going anywhere.

I just don't know if a SJ guy with a SJ wife is going to agree to go east.
