Watch it go down folks
Great deals but there are not enough 3rd/4th liners included for Murray's taste so they will never happen.

EDM: Heatley
ATL: Gilbert, Cogliano, 1st 09

Atlanta gets a solid package in return for the soon to be UFA Kovalchuk. Ottawa gets a sniper back, and Edmonton gets a star Alberta boy to build their offense around.

Teams and values could change, but if Heatley is looking to move to a select number of teams, I don't think a 3 way trade is out of the question. Otherwise, Ottawa would likely hold on to him until they could get a decent offer.
Sorry but if that's the case then we would just deal directly with ATL for Kovalchuk. But if it was a case of where Kovy and Heatley wanted to play, and it worked for all clubs it could pan out. I just can't see ATL bending over like that. Besides, with Heatley requesting a trade, his value is low and would not likely get you Kovy. As lopsided as it sounds, Ottawa might have to add another player as well to ATL.

If not Gilbert, I'm sure you can have your pick of Souray or Visnovsky. Personally if I had the choice I'd go with Visnovsky.

But Heatley has a NMC, and that will limit the bids he will receive. I really can't see him getting more than that.

So Atlanta gets the shaft, and does it while involving themselves in a trade with player who left a stain on himself and the franchise before he left town.

LA says no thanks, unless he's coming with a #1a/1b center.

Holmgren has said he wants to get more size upfront. Gagne is a bargain for 2 more years then will probably be due a raise. Gagne has injury history.

Also, who has a center like Spezza to get Heatley the puck? I think he's got a ton of value, but from some of the trades in this thread you would think that Heatley was the best player of all time. I can't think of a post-Lindros trade that has the sort of value that is included in most of these posts, and when you take into account Heatley's contract - that will have an impact.
Kings have the cap space and the center in Kopitar.

Heatley/Kopitar/Williams would be the top line for the Kings.

Kopitar can pass the puck, Heatley is the sniper, Williams is the garbage goal getter on the line/gritty player.

Unless that first is coming from Ott, then this trade makes no sense for the Oilers. Why wouldn't they just trade Cogiliano, Gilbert, and a first to Atl for Kovalchuk (with an extension)?

I agree, value is a bit low going to Atlanta, but Edmonton or Ottawa could add an additional player to the deal if it made it more suitable for Atlanta.

The entire idea of the trade is that Heatley wants to play for specific teams in the West (no bottom feeders or rebuilding teams), and Ottawa picks up a player that's comparable in skill to Heatley (because a package of picks and players doesn't suit our needs).

EDIT: And Kovalchuk may want an extension in Ottawa, because he would have great line mates to play with.

I must say I'm not really surprised by his trade request -almost had a hunch it was coming

I agree with you - the Sens we're looking a bit stale last year
trading Heatley for a new mix of assets could breathe some new life into the team

Luongo for Heatley

It's a wash salary wise, Ottawa finally gets a world class goalie to help the team. Gives the Canucks the opportunity to really see what they have in Schneider.

Say what? The Kings BIGGEST NEED is a scoring LW, which Heatley so happens to be. Id say with Heatley the need for a 1a/b center is diminished.
